Position Overview

The primary objective of this role is to deliver high-quality financial aid services to students and staff at Hamline University, with a particular focus on financial aid packaging for graduate students. The Financial Aid Counselor will also engage in customer service and loan certifications, along with maintaining website content. Additionally, this position involves the administration of various Minnesota state programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service to undergraduate and graduate students and their families.
  • Oversee and calculate financial aid packages for graduate students, adjusting awards based on special circumstances.
  • Process all federal and non-federal student loan applications and offer loan counseling as necessary.
  • Maintain and update the university's financial aid website as required.
  • Administer state programs, including but not limited to the MN GI Bill, MN Student Teachers, MN Aspiring Teachers of Color Scholarship, and MN Childcare Grant Program.
  • Assist with federal file verification when needed.
  • Stay informed and serve as a backup for military and VA certifying official duties.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and state regulations, as well as institutional policies, advising the Director on matters concerning graduate populations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Reporting Structure

This position reports to the Associate Director of Financial Aid and does not supervise other employees or student workers.

Budget Management

This role does not involve budget management responsibilities.

Required Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Self-motivated with the capacity to initiate and complete individual projects.
  • Flexibility in daily scheduling while maintaining structure to meet project deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, along with excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1-2 years of experience in customer service or a related field within higher education or financial services.
  • Direct experience in financial aid at an institution of higher education.
Working Conditions

Essential functions of this position may require:
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Extended periods of computer use.
  • Traveling to various locations as necessary.
Additional Information

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a workload of 1.0 FTE, spanning 12 months a year. Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion.
