3rd Floor Medical / Surgical Unit

In our 24-bed unit, you will encounter a wide range of medical conditions.

Patients may present with issues such as chest pain, congestive heart failure, syncope, strokes, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and various other medical-surgical diagnoses.

We also care for surgical patients, fostering an environment of excellent teamwork and support.

Patient Ratios: 1 RN:

5-6 Patients, with 3 Nursing Assistants and a Secretary on day shifts, and 3 Nursing Assistants available overnight.

Summary:
Responsible for providing routine direct and indirect patient care in a hospital, clinic, or home health care environment, under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist healthcare providers with routine examinations and procedures, including the procurement of equipment and supplies during emergencies.
  • In psychiatric settings, support patients in reality orientation, engage in behavior modification plans, provide informal support therapy, de-escalate potentially aggressive situations, assist in the physical management of out-of-control patients, facilitate age-appropriate play for children, and monitor therapeutic activities to ensure emotional and safety needs are met.
  • Observe, collect, and document patient information while providing care, promptly reporting significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Assist patients and their families during admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
  • Deliver care and treatments as outlined in the care plan, including measuring vital signs, height and weight, specimen collection, skin preps, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive interactions with patients and families.
  • Provide direct personal care for daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with ambulation.
  • Conduct indirect care tasks, including cleaning work areas, changing linens, restocking supplies, sterilizing instruments, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, assisting in the orientation of new employees and students, and performing routine clerical functions.
  • Reinforce routine teaching provided by registered nurses or physicians and document patient understanding of instructions. Distribute educational materials as requested by patients or healthcare providers.

Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma or General Education Development (GED)
Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Prefer six (6) months of nursing assistant experience
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

  • Fluent in verbal and written English and able to develop basic computer skills.
