The Iowa Museum Association (IMA) has been dedicated to supporting individuals engaged in various museum roles throughout Iowa since its inception in 1976. The IMA acts as a central hub for communication, professional development, advocacy, and member engagement across the state, catering to staff, volunteers, board members, student interns, and anyone interested in the museum sector.

As a private, non-profit entity, the IMA thrives on memberships, donations, earned income, and grants.


Role Summary:

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Iowa Museum Association (IMA) is responsible for providing proactive and dynamic leadership, representing the organization to the public and stakeholders.

This role involves close collaboration with the Board of Directors to craft and execute a robust, mission-driven strategy for member services, programming, partnerships, and fundraising initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be willing to reside in Iowa and possess familiarity with the state's museums, funding bodies, and cultural institutions. This position is fully remote, and the successful candidate will need to establish their own workspace.


Working Environment:

This role operates remotely, requiring the individual to provide their own workspace and internet connectivity.

Periodic in-state travel and occasional out-of-state travel may be necessary.

Flexibility in work hours is expected, including potential evening and weekend commitments.

Access to a vehicle for in-state travel is advantageous, with mileage reimbursement provided for IMA-related travel.


Qualifications:

Essential:

A bachelor's degree or relevant experience in museum studies, public history, nonprofit management, or a related discipline.

Strong analytical abilities to design and assess programs, manage budgets, and navigate complex museum operations.

A solid understanding of museum best practices and ethical standards.

Proven experience in collaboration and project management.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse groups, negotiate contracts, and secure funding.

Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.

Competence in various software applications and the ability to manage multiple online platforms.


Preferred:

Experience with iMIS, WordPress, Drupal, and PastPerfect.

An advanced degree in museum studies, public history, nonprofit management, or a related field.

A minimum of five years in progressively responsible leadership roles.

Strong leadership capabilities, including the ability to inspire teams, implement strategic visions, and develop long-term plans.

Comprehensive knowledge of nonprofit management, including financial oversight and organizational governance.

Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively on multiple projects.

Demonstrated success in fundraising and diversifying revenue streams.

Experience in fostering public-private partnerships among varied stakeholders.

Experience in managing educated staff or volunteers in a nonprofit context.

Proven mentorship of high-potential staff or volunteers.

Experience working closely with a board of directors.

Demonstrated advocacy and representation for a nonprofit cultural organization.

Familiarity with Iowa's resources, government, businesses, and institutions.


Key Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership:

Guided by the IMA's mission and strategic objectives, the CEO will oversee daily operations, annual work plans, and the development of new initiatives.

Ensure robust fiscal risk management policies are in place, including appropriate insurance coverage.

Plan for the effective use of technology and systems, including necessary updates and maintenance.

Actively engage in the review, development, implementation, and evaluation of the IMA's strategic plan.

Ensure compliance with all federal and state fiscal and legal requirements.

Attend Board meetings as an ex-officio member and lead committee meetings to further organizational goals.

Collaborate with the Board to establish strategic direction, budgetary plans, and mission-driven initiatives.

Implement sound management policies and systems.

Recruit, support, and nurture high-quality staff and volunteers to promote efficient operations.

Develop and enforce personnel policies, including conducting annual performance evaluations.


Member Engagement:

Act as an ambassador for the IMA, representing member organizations.

Foster community and encourage member interaction.

Maintain regular communication with members and stakeholders through various channels.

Manage and respond to all inquiries via email, phone, and postal communication.


Program Development:

Engage IMA member organizations and professionals in programs and activities.

Set high standards for membership services, programs, and networking opportunities.

Propose new programs or modifications to existing ones to the Board.

Lead the implementation of all IMA initiatives and evaluate their effectiveness.


Advocacy and Fundraising:

Serve as a public spokesperson for the IMA at various levels.

Maintain strong relationships with state and federal organizations that support IMA's mission.

Guide outreach and advocacy efforts to enhance IMA's credibility and public image.

Work effectively with funders and donors to expand and diversify revenue sources.


Performance Evaluation:

The CEO will undergo an annual review conducted by the Board President, with opportunities for feedback and discussion.

Monthly informal meetings will be held to facilitate ongoing communication and planning.

A written work report will be submitted to the Board President at the end of each month.
