Job Overview

The University of Wyoming is dedicated to fostering a diverse workforce and encourages applicants from varied backgrounds to explore our career opportunities.

Position Title:
Postdoctoral Research Associate

Role Summary:
The
Laboratory for Low-Carbon Energy and Environmental Sustainability within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Wyoming is seeking two postdoctoral research associates to engage in Hydrogen Production and Transport Infrastructure projects.

This laboratory aims to address intricate energy, environmental, and natural resource challenges through innovative technology and policy solutions.

Our research focuses on low-carbon energy systems, hydrogen energy, carbon capture and storage, bioenergy with carbon capture, and the energy-water nexus under climate change constraints.

We have developed the Integrated Environmental Control Model (IECM), a globally recognized tool for power plant modeling and assessment.

The principal investigator, Dr. Haibo Zhai, holds the Roy & Caryl Cline Distinguished Chair in Engineering and is a Professor in Environmental Engineering.

Dr. Zhai also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Energy Resources and the School of Computing at the University of Wyoming.

The laboratory will recruit two postdoctoral research associates for a collaborative initiative funded by the Wyoming Innovation Partnership program, which includes partners from various institutions.

This project aims to investigate the technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy aspects of nuclear-powered hydrogen production from both conventional and renewable gas resources, while also exploring the sustainable development of a hydrogen hub in Wyoming.

The selected postdoctoral research associates will be responsible for conducting thermodynamic process modeling and techno-economic analyses related to nuclear-powered hydrogen production and pipeline transport infrastructure, alongside environmental and resource impact assessments.

Utilizing small modular reactors or nuclear microreactors, along with carbon capture and storage technologies, will be integral to minimizing life cycle carbon emissions.

Based on the findings, the associates will collaborate with Dr. Zhai and co-investigators to develop a workforce training program focused on large-scale hydrogen production and transport infrastructure.

The postdoctoral fellows will be expected to prepare progress reports, present findings at project meetings, share results at conferences, publish research in peer-reviewed journals, and create training materials for the workforce initiative.

Key Responsibilities:

The project will encompass the examination of various issues related to nuclear-powered hydrogen production, including:

  1. Technical assessments
  2. Economic evaluations
  3. Environmental impact studies
  4. Social and policy analysis

The postdoctoral research associates will be engaged in:

  1. Thermodynamic process modeling
  2. Techno-economic analysis
  3. Environmental and resource impact assessments
  4. Preparation of progress reports and presentations
  5. Publication of research findings
  6. Development of training materials

Remote Work Policy:
This position requires on-campus presence to effectively support campus stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

A doctoral degree in chemical and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or related energy disciplines is essential for this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with expertise in hydrogen production, advanced nuclear technologies, gas transport infrastructure, as well as experience with ASPEN Plus, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle analysis are highly encouraged to apply.

Application Materials:

Interested candidates should submit a complete application, including a cover letter, resume or C.V., and contact information for four professional references.

Equal Opportunity Statement:
The University of Wyoming is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to fostering a multicultural environment and strongly encourage applications from women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
