Job Description

The University of Wyoming is committed to fostering a diverse workforce and encourages applicants from various backgrounds to explore our employment opportunities.

JOB TITLE:
Postdoctoral Research Associate

JOB PURPOSE:
The Laboratory for Low-Carbon Energy and Environmental Sustainability within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Wyoming is seeking two postdoctoral research associates focused on Hydrogen Production and Transport Infrastructure.

This laboratory aims to address complex challenges in energy, environmental, and natural resource management through innovative technology and policy solutions.

Current research areas include low-carbon energy systems, hydrogen energy, carbon capture and storage, bioenergy with carbon capture, and the energy-water nexus under carbon constraints for climate change mitigation.

The laboratory is recognized for developing the Integrated Environmental Control Model (IECM), a globally utilized tool for power plant modeling and assessment.

The principal investigator, Dr. Haibo Zhai, holds the Roy & Caryl Cline Distinguished Chair in Engineering and is a Professor in Environmental Engineering at UW.

Dr. Zhai also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Energy Resources and the School of Computing at UW, as well as in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University.

The laboratory is initiating a collaborative project funded by the Wyoming Innovation Partnership program, which involves partnerships with Idaho National Laboratory, Western Wyoming Community College, and the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services.

This multi-institutional project will investigate the technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy dimensions of nuclear-powered hydrogen production from both conventional and renewable gas resources. Additionally, it aims to explore the sustainable development of a hydrogen hub in Wyoming and establish a workforce training program for the emerging hydrogen economy.

The recruited postdoctoral research associates will engage in thermodynamic process modeling and techno-economic analysis related to nuclear-powered hydrogen production and pipeline transport infrastructure, alongside conducting environmental and resource impact assessments.

Incorporating small modular reactors or nuclear microreactors with carbon capture and storage will be essential to reducing life cycle carbon footprints in gas-based hydrogen production.

Based on research findings, the associates will collaborate with Dr. Zhai and co-investigators to develop a comprehensive workforce training program focused on large-scale hydrogen production and transport infrastructure.

The postdoctoral fellows will be responsible for preparing progress reports, presenting findings at project meetings, sharing results at conferences, publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, and creating training materials for the workforce program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The project will examine various dimensions related to nuclear-powered hydrogen production and its implications for the environment and society. The postdoctoral research associates will conduct essential modeling and analysis to support this initiative.

They will also be involved in preparing reports, presenting at meetings, and contributing to publications.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
This position is integral to campus operations and requires the successful candidate to work on-site.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A doctoral degree in chemical and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or other energy-related fields is required for this position.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants with expertise in hydrogen production, advanced nuclear technology, gas transport infrastructure, as well as proficiency in ASPEN Plus, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle analysis, are strongly encouraged to apply.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Complete applications must include a cover letter, resume or C.V., and contact information for four work-related references.

HIRING STATEMENT:
The University of Wyoming is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Educator and Employer, committed to a multicultural environment and strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities.

ABOUT LARAMIE:
The University of Wyoming is situated in Laramie, a vibrant community in the Rocky Mountain West, known for its academic excellence and research initiatives.
