Job Description
The University of Wyoming is committed to fostering a diverse workforce and encourages applications from individuals with varied backgrounds.
JOB TITLE:
Postdoctoral Research Associate
JOB PURPOSE:
The Laboratory for Low-Carbon Energy and Environmental Sustainability within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Wyoming is seeking two postdoctoral research associates focused on Hydrogen Production and Transport Infrastructure.
This laboratory aims to address complex challenges in energy, environmental, and natural resource management through innovative technology and policy solutions.
Current research interests encompass low-carbon energy systems, hydrogen energy, carbon capture and storage, bioenergy with carbon capture, and the energy-water nexus under climate change constraints. The laboratory is recognized for developing the Integrated Environmental Control Model (IECM), a globally utilized tool for power plant modeling and evaluation.
The principal investigator, Dr. Haibo Zhai, holds the Roy & Caryl Cline Distinguished Chair in Engineering and is a Professor in Environmental Engineering. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Energy Resources and the School of Computing at the University of Wyoming.
We are looking to recruit two postdoctoral research associates for a collaborative project funded by the Wyoming Innovation Partnership program, involving partners from various institutions.
This project aims to explore the technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy dimensions of nuclear-powered hydrogen production from both conventional and renewable gas sources, assess the potential for establishing a hydrogen hub in Wyoming, and develop an educational and workforce training initiative related to the emerging hydrogen economy.
The selected postdoctoral research associates will engage in thermodynamic process modeling and techno-economic analysis for nuclear-powered hydrogen production and pipeline transport systems, alongside conducting environmental and resource impact assessments.
Incorporating small modular reactors or nuclear microreactors with carbon capture and storage technologies will be essential to minimize life cycle carbon emissions.
Based on research findings, they will collaborate with Dr. Zhai and project co-investigators to create a workforce training program focused on large-scale hydrogen production and transport infrastructure. The postdoctoral fellows will be responsible for preparing progress reports, presenting findings at project meetings, sharing results at conferences, publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, and developing educational materials for the workforce program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The project will investigate various aspects of nuclear-powered hydrogen production, including technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy considerations, while also exploring the feasibility of a hydrogen hub in Wyoming and creating a workforce training program.
The postdoctoral research associates will conduct thermodynamic modeling and techno-economic assessments, as well as environmental impact evaluations.
They will also prepare reports, present findings, publish research, and develop training resources.
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
This position is integral to campus operations and requires the successful candidate to work on-site.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A doctoral degree in chemical and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or related energy disciplines is required for this position.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants with expertise in hydrogen production, advanced nuclear technologies, and gas transport systems, as well as proficiency in ASPEN Plus, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle assessment, are strongly encouraged to apply.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
To apply, please complete the online application and upload the following materials: cover letter, resume or C.V., and contact information for four professional references.
