Cheyenne, Wyoming, United States University of Wyoming Full time

Job Description

The University of Wyoming is committed to fostering a diverse workforce and encourages applicants from varied backgrounds to explore our employment opportunities.

JOB TITLE:
Postdoctoral Research Associate

JOB PURPOSE:
The Laboratory for Low-Carbon Energy and Environmental Sustainability within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Wyoming is seeking two postdoctoral research associates to engage in innovative research focused on Hydrogen Production and Transport Infrastructure.

This laboratory aims to address the multifaceted challenges posed by energy, environmental, and natural resource issues through a combination of technology and policy initiatives.

Our research primarily targets low-carbon energy systems, hydrogen energy, carbon capture and storage, bioenergy with carbon capture, and the intricate relationship between energy and water resources amidst climate change constraints.

We are recognized for developing the Integrated Environmental Control Model (IECM), a globally utilized tool for power plant modeling and evaluation.

The principal investigator, Dr. Haibo Zhai, holds the Roy & Caryl Cline Distinguished Chair in Engineering and serves as a Professor in Environmental Engineering at UW.

Dr. Zhai also contributes as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Energy Resources and the School of Computing at UW, as well as in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University.

The laboratory is set to recruit two postdoctoral research associates for a collaborative project funded by the Wyoming Innovation Partnership program, involving partners from UW, Idaho National Laboratory, Western Wyoming Community College, and the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services.

This project aims to investigate the technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy dimensions of nuclear-powered hydrogen production from both conventional and renewable gas sources, assess the feasibility of establishing a hydrogen hub in Wyoming, and create a workforce training program tailored to the emerging hydrogen economy.

The selected postdoctoral research associates will be responsible for conducting thermodynamic process modeling and techno-economic assessments related to nuclear-powered hydrogen production and pipeline transport systems, alongside evaluating environmental and resource impacts.

Incorporating small modular reactors or nuclear microreactors and carbon capture technologies will be essential to minimize life cycle carbon emissions in gas-based hydrogen production.

Based on the findings, the associates will collaborate with Dr. Zhai and project co-investigators to develop a comprehensive workforce training initiative focused on large-scale hydrogen production and transport infrastructure.

The postdoctoral fellows will be expected to prepare progress reports, present findings at project meetings, share results at conferences, publish research in peer-reviewed journals, and create educational materials for the workforce program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The project will encompass a thorough examination of the technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy aspects associated with nuclear-powered hydrogen production from both conventional and renewable gas resources. The aim is to explore the potential for sustainable hydrogen hub development in Wyoming and to establish an educational and workforce training program focused on the emerging hydrogen economy.

The postdoctoral research associates will conduct thermodynamic modeling and techno-economic analysis for nuclear-powered hydrogen production and pipeline transport systems, along with environmental and resource impact assessments.

They will also be responsible for preparing progress reports, presenting findings at project meetings, sharing results at conferences, publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, and developing training materials for the workforce program.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
This position requires the successful candidate to be available for on-campus work to provide essential support to campus stakeholders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A doctoral degree in chemical and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or related energy disciplines is mandatory for this position.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants with expertise in hydrogen production, advanced nuclear technologies, and gas transport infrastructure, as well as proficiency in ASPEN Plus, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle assessment, are highly encouraged to apply.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:
To apply, candidates must complete the online application and upload the following documents: cover letter, resume or C.V., and contact information for four professional references.

HIRING STATEMENT:
The University of Wyoming is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Educator and Employer, dedicated to creating a multicultural environment and strongly encouraging applications from women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
