Cheyenne, Wyoming, United States University of Wyoming Full time

Job Overview

The University of Wyoming is committed to fostering a diverse workforce and encourages applications from individuals with varied backgrounds.

POSITION TITLE:
Postdoctoral Research Associate

POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The Laboratory for Low-Carbon Energy and Environmental Sustainability within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is seeking two postdoctoral research associates to engage in innovative research focused on Hydrogen Production and Transport Infrastructure.

This laboratory aims to address intricate challenges related to energy, environment, and natural resources through a comprehensive approach that combines technology and policy.

Current research areas include low-carbon energy systems, hydrogen energy, carbon capture and storage, bioenergy with carbon capture, and the interconnection between energy and water under carbon constraints for climate change mitigation.

The laboratory is recognized for developing the Integrated Environmental Control Model (IECM), a globally utilized tool for power plant modeling and evaluation.

The principal investigator, Dr. Haibo Zhai, holds the Roy & Caryl Cline Distinguished Chair in Engineering and serves as a Professor in Environmental Engineering.

He also holds adjunct professorships in multiple schools at the University of Wyoming and Carnegie Mellon University.

The laboratory is set to recruit two postdoctoral research associates for a collaborative project funded by the Wyoming Innovation Partnership program, which includes partnerships with various institutions.

This multi-institutional initiative aims to explore the technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy dimensions of nuclear-powered hydrogen derived from both conventional and renewable gas resources, assess the feasibility of establishing a hydrogen hub in Wyoming, and develop educational and workforce training programs related to the emerging hydrogen economy.

The selected postdoctoral research associates will be responsible for conducting thermodynamic process modeling and techno-economic evaluations for nuclear-powered hydrogen production and pipeline transport systems, alongside environmental and resource impact assessments.

Incorporating small modular reactors or nuclear microreactors and carbon capture technologies will be essential to minimize life cycle carbon emissions associated with gas-based hydrogen production.

Based on the research findings, the associates will collaborate with Dr. Zhai and other project co-investigators to formulate a workforce training program focused on large-scale hydrogen production and transport systems.

The postdoctoral fellows will also be tasked with preparing progress reports, presenting findings at project meetings, disseminating results at conferences, publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, and creating training materials for the workforce initiative.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibilities of the postdoctoral research associates include:

  1. Conducting comprehensive modeling and analysis related to nuclear-powered hydrogen production.
  2. Evaluating pipeline transport infrastructure and its environmental impacts.
  3. Preparing and presenting progress reports and research findings.
  4. Publishing research outcomes in reputable journals.
  5. Developing educational materials for workforce training programs.

REMOTE WORK POLICY:
This role is essential for supporting campus operations and requires the successful candidate to work on-site.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A doctoral degree in chemical and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related energy discipline is essential for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants with expertise in hydrogen production, advanced nuclear technologies, gas transport systems, as well as experience with ASPEN Plus, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle assessment are highly encouraged to apply.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Interested candidates should submit a complete application, including a cover letter, resume or C.V., and contact information for four professional references.

HIRING STATEMENT:
The University of Wyoming is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer committed to a diverse and inclusive environment. We strongly encourage applications from women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
