Land Use Compliance Inspector

Primary Purpose
Responsible for enforcing the Santa Fe County Sustainable Land Development Code and other relevant ordinances under the Land Use department; evaluates plats, blueprints, development permits, and documentation for presentation in court.
Essential Job Functions
- Acts as an enforcement officer for the Santa Fe County Sustainable Land Development Code and identifies code violations.
- Gathers data and prepares reports and presentations for court proceedings; represents the County in legal hearings.
- Engages with the public regarding code and zoning regulations; conducts site inspections; assists with special projects for statistical analysis; and performs data entry of citizen requests daily.
- Reviews permit applications for adherence to the Sustainable Land Development Code; conducts site and property investigations for zoning compliance; inspects new development sites for code adherence; collects evidence for case files; examines roads, proposed remodeling and addition plans, terrain, and flood plains for compliance.
- Issues notices of violations; issues citations for breaches of the Sustainable Land Development Code and other County ordinances; verifies third-party complaints and checks compliance with the Sustainable Land Development Code, other County ordinances, and state statutes; reviews maps, plats, and blueprints for compliance; enters and updates case files into the computer system; and maintains a daily log of activities. Provides excellent customer service by responding promptly to requests and complaints in person or in writing, demonstrating professional courtesy to both internal and external customers. Assists property owners in understanding ordinance requirements and provides clear and concise guidance.
- Some understanding of the Sustainable Land Development Code and related ordinances; principles and practices of County planning and relevant research methods.
- Ability to interpret Ordinance Enforcement codes, regulations, and laws, and to identify code violations.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, plats, site plans, and blueprints; to utilize mapping tools.
- Ability to operate various word-processing, spreadsheet, database, and other software applications.
- Ability to prepare accurate, complete, and legible reports and to deliver detailed, accurate, and objective oral presentations and responses to inquiries.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, governmental and private agencies, and the public.
- High school diploma or equivalent plus three (3) years of experience in code interpretation and compliance or construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed occasionally in an office environment and frequently outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles, and/or allergens. Work involves high-risk or potentially dangerous situations, exposure to hazardous materials, excessive noise, hostile individuals, and work near hazardous/moving equipment or machinery. Work requires the use of protective clothing, equipment, devices, or materials. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; and talk or hear. Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. Clarity of vision at long distance and short distance is required. Occasional overnight travel is required.
Conditions of Employment:
Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver's License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties. Candidate must obtain and/or maintain all certifications required.
