Junior Packaging Systems Engineer

As a Junior Packaging Systems Engineer, you will collaborate with our process, controls, and facility system engineers to define, design, implement, and launch packaging machinery lines for clients in the food and beverage sector. Dennis Group is a leading design-build engineering firm specializing in the construction of food and beverage processing facilities. In this role, you will be integral in outlining packaging machinery project specifications, estimating costs, creating packaging flow diagrams, and providing onsite support during construction and commissioning phases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing innovative design concepts, cost estimates, and functional specifications for packaging lines.
  • Interpreting mechanical design criteria and client specifications to ensure comprehensive realization in the packaging system design.
  • Overseeing the specification, procurement, installation, and commissioning of packaging machinery.
  • Coordinating and managing on-site construction projects.
  • Engaging in machine and process design activities.
  • Formulating machine testing requirements and procedures.
  • Preparing equipment specifications and procurement documentation, along with facility layouts.
  • Conducting surveys of existing conditions.
  • Designing packaging flow diagrams.
  • Creating material balance assessments.
  • Developing a comprehensive packaging matrix.
  • Compiling equipment lists.
  • Assisting with the preparation of equipment bid packages.
  • Understanding the sizing and placement of control and electrical panels.
  • Drafting design basis documents and scopes of work.
  • Producing basis of design documentation.
  • Advising on manufacturing and packaging design principles, including conveyance, wrapping, bagging, cartoning, filling, bottling, case packing, and palletizing.
  • Supporting process simulation efforts.
  • Providing assistance on construction sites.
  • Monitoring compliance with construction plans, specifications, and details.
  • Contributing to sanitary design and warehouse layout.
  • Creating AutoCAD equipment layouts.
  • Researching best practices in packaging engineering.
  • Fostering talent development within our organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in a bachelor's degree program in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, packaging engineering, industrial engineering, or manufacturing engineering.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites, potentially 30% to 50% of the time.
  • Familiarity with process flow diagrams and P&IDs is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and a positive, collaborative attitude.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing and packaging design principles.
  • Experience with MS Office, MS Project, and AutoCAD.
  • Bonus points for:
    • Knowledge of sanitary design and warehouse layout.
    • Experience in process simulation.
    • Previous experience in food and beverage, pharmaceutical, or other sanitary environments.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
  • Capability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 50% travel may be required to visit project sites and other offices.
