The salary range for a patrol officer is $51,500 to $70,550.

Job Overview

The Canton Police Department is actively seeking Police Officers

Key Responsibilities: The Police Officer will be responsible for preventing and addressing crime, as well as safeguarding life and property. Duties include apprehending and prosecuting offenders, upholding regulatory measures, and maintaining peace. Officers are expected to keep their equipment in excellent condition and conduct themselves according to high ethical standards, both on and off duty.

Opportunities for advancement include Patrol Operations, Detective Bureau, K-9 operations, Community Involvement Unit, SWAT, Coordinated Response Unit, Crime Scene Investigations, Real-Time Crime Analyst, Training Bureau, Federal Task Forces, and Metro-Narcotics operations. Promotional exams are conducted as positions become available. Our officers come from diverse backgrounds and serve in multiple roles, making a significant difference in the community.

City Overview: Canton is a city in Stark County, Ohio, known for being the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the birthplace of the National Football League. The city is experiencing a revitalization, highlighted by its flourishing arts district in the downtown area. Application Process:
  1. Complete an application and upload required documents, including your driver's license, high school diploma/transcripts, DD-214 (if applicable), college degree/transcripts (if applicable), and OPOTA certification (if applicable). Incomplete applications may lead to disqualification.
  2. The Canton Civil Service staff will review your application. If you meet the minimum requirements and have all necessary documentation, you will receive further information regarding the Police Officer written and physical examination.
  3. After applying, you will receive a Personal Data Report (PDR) via email. This form must be completed and uploaded by the examination date.
  4. Background investigations will be conducted, requiring signed release forms to be submitted.
Job Requirements:

Age Limit: 21 to 39. No appointments after the 40th birthday.

Citizenship Required: Must be a U.S. citizen or possess a valid permanent resident card.

Education: High school diploma or GED required.

Driver's License: Must possess a valid driver's license.

Language Skills: Must be able to read and speak English.

Vision: Must be able to distinguish primary colors.

College Education: Not required, but bonus credits available for degrees.

Academy Certification: Preferred but not mandatory. Must obtain OPOTA certification after hire.

Criminal Record: Felony convictions disqualify applicants.

Testing Information:

The testing process includes a written examination and physical fitness test, both administered by the Civil Service Commission. A passing score of 70% is required on the written exam, which constitutes 100% of the total grade. The physical fitness test is pass/fail.

Medical and Psychological Evaluation: Applicants must undergo a physical evaluation, drug test, and psychological assessment. Eligibility for hire is contingent upon successful completion of these evaluations.

Background Investigation: Candidates will undergo a confidential background investigation, including criminal and driving record checks.
