Salary After 6 Months: $74,412

Salary After One Year: $82,577

Police Officers hired within the designated timeframe will receive a top salary of $99,156 after two years of service.

POLICE OFFICER - POSITION SUMMARY

ROLE DESCRIPTION: This role involves general law enforcement duties focused on safeguarding life and property while enforcing criminal and traffic regulations. The officer is responsible for maintaining public safety, preventing crime, apprehending offenders, and enforcing laws within a designated area during assigned shifts. Officers may also be assigned to specialized tasks and training roles.

The officer must demonstrate the ability to make quick, sound decisions in emergency situations. As the officer gains experience, they will be entrusted with increased responsibilities. Supervision is provided by a superior officer through inspections, report reviews, and evaluations of police service effectiveness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Patrol assigned areas to maintain law and order, prevent crime, and enforce traffic regulations.
  • Respond to calls regarding accidents, thefts, and other criminal activities.
  • Provide first aid at the scene of incidents, conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, and may arrest suspects.
  • Engage with the public at the police desk to address complaints and inquiries.
  • Prepare evidence for legal proceedings and testify in court as necessary.
  • Maintain order in court and serve legal documents.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to learn the geography of the Township and surrounding areas.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid techniques.
  • Understanding of modern police practices and procedures.
  • Proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Ability to learn and adhere to relevant laws and ordinances.
  • Capacity to complete required training successfully.
  • Ability to respond competently and calmly in emergencies.
  • Physical strength and endurance for demanding work conditions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors and colleagues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for public engagement.
  • Willingness to comply with departmental appearance standards.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be certified or certifiable as a Michigan Police Officer or currently enrolled in an accredited Police Academy.
  • A minimum of an Associate's Degree in Law Enforcement or a related field is required.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Successful completion of the MCOLES Reading and Writing Skills Examination.
  • Completion of the MCOLES Physical Fitness Test within the past year is required.
