Investigator (State's Attorney's Office)

The Lincoln County State’s Attorney’s Office is growing, and we are inviting applications for a new Investigator to join our legal team in Canton, SD. The Investigator performs professional investigative work to support criminal prosecutions and civil actions handled by the Lincoln County State's Attorney's Office. Responsibilities of the Investigator may include preparing cases for trials; providing summaries of victim and witness accounts and impact statements; explaining case procedures to clients and assisting them with procedures and processes; preparing and interviewing victims and witnesses for legal proceedings; advocating, referring, and coordinating services for clients; determining restitution; preparing evidence for courtroom presentation; overseeing the storage, transfer, and security of evidence; performing background checks; general criminal investigations, and serving as a liaison between the State's Attorney's Office and other agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field with two years of experience in law enforcement or a related field. A comparable combination of education and experience may be considered. Must complete pre-employment background process. Must be law enforcement certified or eligible to reinstate law enforcement certification.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of technical equipment for copying and editing patrol car videos and/or outside surveillance and media.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of South Dakota law and law enforcement policies and procedures.
- Ability to work effectively with victims and witnesses of the criminal justice system.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal directions.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other agencies, and the public.
- Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor.
What will you be expected to do:
- Prepare case files for trials. Provide records and reports. Provide summaries of victim and witness accounts and impact statements. Conduct additional investigations. Assist prosecutors in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of cases. Provide testimony at legal proceedings.
- Conduct criminal background checks on defendants and potential witnesses. Investigate claims of false identity. Compile affidavits for investigative work on locating witnesses. Locate missing parents and witnesses. General criminal investigations.
- Evaluate and address evidence deficiencies. Obtain reports and records. Obtain, copy, edit, and prepare evidence for courtroom presentation. Provide for the physical transfer of evidence to and from the courthouse for legal proceedings. Provide for the release and return of all evidence after cases are closed and appeals are expired. Oversee the security and storage of cold case and closed case files.
