Starting Salary: $66,245

Salary After 6 Months: $74,412

One Year Experience Salary: $82,577

Two Year Experience Salary: $93,464


Police Officers hired on or before the designated cutoff date will receive a top salary of $99,156 after two years of service.

POLICE OFFICER - POSITION DESCRIPTION

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This position involves general law enforcement duties aimed at protecting life and property while enforcing criminal and traffic laws as well as local regulations. The officer is tasked with safeguarding life and property, preventing crime, apprehending offenders, and enforcing laws within a designated area during assigned shifts. Additional responsibilities may include special assignments and training roles.

The officer must demonstrate the ability to make sound judgments quickly in emergency situations. As experience is gained, additional responsibilities will be assigned. Supervision is provided by a superior officer through inspections, report reviews, and evaluations of police service effectiveness.

KEY DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Patrolling assigned areas to maintain law and order, prevent crime, and enforce vehicle operation and parking regulations.
  • Responding to calls regarding accidents, robberies, and other criminal activities.
  • Providing first aid and conducting preliminary investigations at the scene of incidents.
  • Gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and making arrests as necessary.
  • Addressing inquiries and complaints at the police desk and directing individuals to appropriate authorities.
  • Preparing evidence for legal proceedings and testifying in court.
  • Maintaining order in court and serving criminal processes.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to learn the geography of the Township and surrounding areas.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid techniques.
  • Understanding of modern policing principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Ability to learn and enforce relevant laws and ordinances.
  • Capability to complete required training successfully.
  • Ability to respond competently and calmly in emergencies.
  • Physical strength and endurance for demanding work conditions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors and colleagues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for dealing with the public.
  • Willingness to adhere to the Department's Appearance Standards.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a Michigan Police Officer; must possess Police Officer Certification at the time of hire.
  • A minimum of an Associate's Degree in Law Enforcement or a related field.
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Successful completion of required examinations and physical fitness tests.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent standing and walking.

HIRING PROCESS FOR POLICE OFFICER:
