Step 1: $20.79
Step 2: $22.09
Step 3: $23.39
Step 4: $24.69

All new hires are guaranteed to start at Step 3, with a salary of $23.39.

Position Overview:

This role is a professional and responsible position within the City of Canton Income Tax Division, dealing with highly sensitive and confidential tax documents and information.

The position requires extensive interaction with tax professionals and the public, as well as occasional collaboration with other city departments.

Responsibilities include assisting taxpayers with inquiries, preparing municipal tax forms, facilitating tax payments, and conducting audits.

The employee will manage a designated group of accounts and will be directly accountable for audit and collection functions for all assigned accounts. Additional related tasks may be assigned by the Income Tax Director or City Treasurer.


Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have graduated from an accredited college or university with a major or concentration in Accounting or Finance. An associate degree is mandatory. While prior experience in tax preparation and auditing is preferred, it is not a strict requirement.

Unique Requirements:
Candidates must exhibit a high level of trustworthiness, reliability, responsibility, organization, and thoroughness. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both public and private sector tax professionals is crucial. Candidates must demonstrate sound judgment and professional integrity, function efficiently under pressure, and follow complex oral and written instructions. A strong mathematical aptitude and accuracy are required, along with a basic understanding of accounting principles and bookkeeping procedures. Familiarity with the Municipal Tax Code, Internal Revenue Code, and Ohio Revised Code provisions related to municipal tax regulations is necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

The Tax Compliance Officer will interact continuously with the public, maintaining the professionalism and integrity of the Income Tax Division and the City of Canton.

This position is specifically responsible for tax assessment, collections, and auditing of assigned personal accounts, ensuring taxpayer compliance and accuracy in reporting according to the Municipal Tax Code, Ohio Revised Code, and Internal Revenue Code.

The employee will process payments and provide backup support for Auditors II, receptionists, cashiers, and bookkeepers as needed.


Job Duties:

The following duties are illustrative of the various types of work that may be performed:

  • Responding to taxpayer inquiries via phone, in person, and in writing regarding municipal tax code, filings, balances, refunds, estimates, withholdings, delinquencies, and audits.
  • Assisting taxpayers with electronic filing and payment transactions.
  • Helping taxpayers prepare city tax returns and verifying account information using software.
  • Setting up new accounts and processing payments.
  • Collecting unpaid tax balances and negotiating payment terms based on individual circumstances.
  • Conducting audits of tax returns in assigned account groups and ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Preparing documentation for legal proceedings against uncollectible accounts.
  • Researching and identifying non-filers and delinquent filers through various sources.
  • Calculating and assessing fines, penalties, and interest due.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the Income Tax Director or City Treasurer.

A written examination will assess knowledge in general accounting, federal income tax, city income tax, public relations, number verification, reading comprehension, problem-solving, and other related areas.
