Police Officers hired on or before the specified deadline will receive a top salary of $99,156 after two years of service.

POLICE OFFICER - POSITION SUMMARY

ROLE DESCRIPTION: This position involves general law enforcement duties aimed at safeguarding life and property while enforcing criminal and traffic laws as well as local regulations. The officer is responsible for crime prevention, apprehending offenders, and enforcing laws within a designated area during assigned shifts. The officer may also be tasked with special assignments and training responsibilities.

The officer must demonstrate the ability to make quick, sound decisions in applying appropriate law enforcement techniques during emergencies. As the officer gains experience, they will be entrusted with additional responsibilities. Supervision is provided by a superior officer through personal evaluations, report reviews, and overall assessment of police service effectiveness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Patrol assigned areas to maintain law and order, prevent and detect criminal activity, and enforce vehicle operation and parking laws.
  • Respond to calls regarding accidents, thefts, and other criminal activities.
  • Provide first aid at incidents, conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, and may arrest suspects.
  • Address calls at various locations, including commercial and residential areas.
  • Assist individuals at the police desk with inquiries and complaints, directing them to appropriate authorities as needed.
  • Provide escorts when necessary.
  • Prepare evidence for legal proceedings, testify in court, and document all activities and case outcomes.
  • Maintain order in court and transport detainees as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to familiarize oneself with the streets and layout of the Township and surrounding areas.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid practices.
  • Understanding of modern law enforcement principles and procedures.
  • Proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Ability to learn and adhere to relevant state laws and local ordinances.
  • Capability to successfully complete necessary training.
  • Ability to respond competently and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Physical strength and endurance for demanding work under challenging conditions.
  • Ability to collaborate with supervisors and colleagues and respect the chain of command.
  • Skill in interacting with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Willingness to comply with the Department's Standards of Appearance policy.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a Michigan Police Officer or enrollment in an accredited Police Academy; must possess Police Officer Certification from the State of Michigan upon hire.
  • A minimum of an Associate's Degree in Law Enforcement or a related field.
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Successful completion of the MCOLES Reading and Writing Skills Examination.
  • Completion of the MCOLES Physical Fitness Test within the last twelve months at the time of the interview.

Hiring Process for Police Officer

Canton Township is currently accepting applications for the Police Officer position.

Application Process:

Complete and submit an online application. Applicants will receive a confirmation email once their application is submitted.

Testing Requirements:

Applicants must complete the EMPCO Law Enforcement Testing System - National Criminal Justice Officer Selection Inventory - I (NCJOSI^2). Those with one year of continuous full-time service as a licensed Police Officer are exempt from this requirement.

  • If selected for a contingent offer, candidates must provide proof of successful completion of the EMPCO Law Enforcement Testing System within the past 12 months.
  • Candidates will have up to 45 days after the interview to fulfill this requirement.
  • Candidates with a current EMPCO Test (dated within the past 12 months) will meet this requirement.

MCOLES Physical Fitness Test:

  • If selected for a contingent offer, candidates must provide proof of successful completion of the MCOLES Physical Fitness Test within the past 12 months.
  • Candidates will have up to 45 days after the interview to complete this requirement.
  • Candidates with a current fitness test certificate (dated within the past 12 months) will meet this requirement.

Interview Preparation:

  • Qualified applicants will receive an email with information on preparing for the oral board interview, including a list of potential questions.
  • It is the applicant's responsibility to follow up with Human Resources if they do not receive an update within 7 calendar days of submitting their application.

Interview and Selection Process:

  • Oral boards may be scheduled throughout the posting period.
  • Upon conclusion of interviews, an Eligibility Hiring List will be prepared, valid for one year.
