The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is seeking candidates for the position of Law Enforcement Officer. This role is essential in delivering policing services to uphold public safety and order across Lincoln County. Eligibility Criteria for the Hiring Bonus:

  • Successful completion of the recruitment process and pre-employment background checks.
  • Must be a current Certified Law Enforcement Officer in South Dakota or another state and pass the reciprocity exam within one year of employment.
  • Must maintain good standing with the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission or the equivalent in the state of certification.
  • Eligible candidates currently certified in South Dakota will receive a structured bonus payment schedule.
  • Must uphold satisfactory performance standards.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Conducting patrols within county limits, responding to service calls, investigating accidents, and preparing reports.
  • Performing security assessments of properties and conducting law enforcement duties, including issuing citations and making arrests.
  • Managing traffic incidents to ensure safety and assist victims.
  • Conducting area security checks and maintaining law enforcement presence.
  • Utilizing department-issued firearms and meeting qualification standards.
  • Executing legal documents such as warrants and subpoenas.
  • Monitoring communication channels and coordinating responses to emergencies.
  • Addressing inquiries and requests for assistance from the public and other agencies.
  • Providing courtroom security and attending legal proceedings as required.
  • Documenting all actions taken during duty and ensuring accurate case reporting.
  • Assisting in training new deputies and staying updated on departmental protocols.
  • Exercising authority in accordance with the oath of office.
  • This position may involve specialized roles such as forensics, detective work, or jail coordination.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a certified officer with two years of college education (Associate's degree) in criminal justice or a related field, or two years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer, or two years of active military service, or four years of military reserve experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Candidates must pass a physical examination and a pre-employment drug screening. Age requirement: 21 years at the time of hiring.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, business, social science, or a related field, along with three years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer or equivalent military experience. Knowledge of evidence processing and preservation techniques is advantageous.
