The Community Safety Assistant (CSA) role is a non-sworn, non-certified position aimed at providing valuable work experience for individuals aspiring to a career in law enforcement. CSAs who meet specific criteria may be eligible for educational and training reimbursement as per departmental guidelines.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Community Safety Assistant (CSA) is designed to offer professional experience to those interested in law enforcement careers. Responsibilities include processing individuals in custody, performing jail-related tasks, assisting law enforcement officers with the management of detainees, and providing administrative support to the front desk officer while executing non-peace officer duties as assigned.
WORK EXAMPLES:
- Conducts duties of a jail attendant, including searching individuals taken into custody, assisting with the restraint of subjects, and processing arrests in accordance with established policies.
- Handles fingerprinting and photographing of detainees, processes court documentation, and performs related tasks as directed.
- Maintains the front desk and jail/booking area to ensure operational safety and efficiency.
- Assists with lobby traffic, including aiding citizens and/or township staff.
- Supports Police and Fire Personnel as necessary and performs various public safety tasks, excluding those of a peace officer or firefighter.
- Records and prepares reports as assigned.
- Logs all activities accurately and promptly.
- Stays updated on scheduled training to maintain knowledge and proficiency necessary for successful task completion.
- Responsible for understanding and adhering to federal, state, and local laws, as well as departmental policies and procedures related to the CSA role.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Demonstrated interest in Law Enforcement through education, training, and volunteer activities. Preferred completion of at least twelve college credits in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Homeland Security, or a related field.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Public Safety clearance throughout employment.
- Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.
- Basic computer proficiency is required.
- Prior experience in handling money is preferred.
- Capability to provide emergency assistance in a calm and efficient manner.
- Ability to gather necessary information for prompt and effective service delivery.
- Must possess the physical stamina to respond to management situations and assist with the restraint of individuals in custody.
- Ability to remain composed and act swiftly in emergencies.
- Competence in operating required office equipment effectively.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare necessary reports.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, especially in high-stress situations.
- Quick learner with the ability to grasp job duties efficiently.
- Willingness to work various shifts, including afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

Hiring Process - Community Safety Assistant (CSA)

- Tests will be scored, and those achieving a minimum score will be considered for an oral interview.
Oral Interviews:
- Interviews will be scheduled following the written test.
Eligibility List:
- An Eligibility Hiring List will be prepared following the conclusion of the hiring process.
