Position Summary:

  • The Laboratory Safety and Facilities Coordinator will report directly to the Head of Operations, acting as a vital link between the Operations and Research & Development Teams.
  • This role involves managing daily operations related to facilities, laboratory, and regulatory programs that influence our research initiatives, including lab operations, hazardous waste management, emergency protocols, and environmental health and safety programs.
  • The Coordinator will play an essential role within the Operations Team.
  • Safety and Compliance: Act as the primary contact for all Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) issues, including conducting internal audits, managing permit renewals, and facilitating regulatory inspections.
  • Oversee the biohazardous and chemical waste management program, including scheduling and organizing hazardous waste pickups, tracking waste generation, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ensure proper storage and disposal of chemicals throughout the facility, guiding scientists on best practices to mitigate risks to personnel and the environment.
  • Collaborate with the Safety Team and EHS Consultants to ensure compliance with waste storage procedures and conduct regular inspections of accumulation areas.
  • Maintain current EHS permits and regulatory requirements, including hazardous materials management plans and OSHA training programs.
  • Work with internal teams and external consultants to refine safety protocols and develop lab Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at continuous improvement.
  • Facilities Maintenance: Address all facility and equipment requests, including repairs, installations, and preventative maintenance.
  • Conduct on-site troubleshooting and coordinate with service providers for additional support as necessary.
  • Manage the scheduling of service calls and maintenance activities to minimize disruption to lab operations.
  • Enhance the management system for lab equipment, ensuring accurate documentation of maintenance and inspections.
  • Collaborate with Operations to improve safety and efficiency in laboratory environments.
  • Inventory and Logistics: Assist in maintaining the chemical inventory management system and support the receiving and distribution of laboratory supplies.
  • Ensure laboratory staff are informed about received materials and their associated hazards.
  • Support shipping requests to ensure timely delivery of critical samples to partners.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Engineering, or a related field. Certification as a Safety Professional is advantageous.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in Facilities, Environmental Health & Safety, or Laboratory Operations.
  • Experience managing hazardous waste and compliance programs is preferred.
  • Familiarity with state and federal safety regulations in laboratory settings is a plus.
  • Availability for on-call duties related to laboratory emergencies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and possess strong communication skills.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty pounds and perform physical tasks associated with laboratory environments.
