Job Summary

Santa Clara University is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Operations Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory support team, you will provide critical support for day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment for our students, faculty, and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support of Laboratory Operations
    • Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and chemicals
    • Manage hazardous waste disposal and storage
    • Monitor and maintain inventory systems
    • Ensure general facilities are clean and well-maintained
  • Materials Management
    • Purchase laboratory chemicals and supplies
    • Track purchases and maintain records
    • Assist with management of chemical storage areas
    • Coordinate hazardous waste collection, storage, and disposal
  • Environmental Health and Safety
    • Ensure health and safety policies are followed
    • Inspect safety equipment and make repairs as needed
    • Maintain and organize safety training records
  • General Facilities
    • Routinely inspect laboratories and take corrective action as needed
    • Setup and track repair and maintenance work orders
    • Serve as liaison with university operations department
  • Supervision of Student Employees
    • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise teaching and technical assistants
    • Ensure student employees receive necessary training and support
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a physical science, such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, or engineering
  • Coursework in hazardous materials management preferred
  • 0-3 years of directly applicable work experience
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and faculty
