Job Overview

Position Summary

The Community Engagement Specialist plays a vital role in the Downtown Dallas Inc. outreach initiative aimed at assisting individuals facing homelessness. This position focuses on building relationships with those in need, offering essential support services, and facilitating access to resources that promote stable housing and address the root causes of homelessness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct outreach activities in urban areas, collaborating with local service providers to connect individuals with case management and relevant support services.
  • Support the outreach coordinator in managing the street outreach team's operations.
  • Maintain precise records of all interactions with homeless individuals using a mobile tracking system.
  • Guide individuals towards suitable community resources and support services.
  • Perform follow-up visits to ensure ongoing support and service delivery.
  • Engage with homeless individuals to foster trust and assess their needs through a Housing First framework.
  • Make referrals to appropriate shelters and agencies based on individual needs.
  • Participate in regular outreach meetings as required.
  • Carry out additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in outreach, homeless services, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

  • Adaptability: Flexibility to work in various environments and adjust to changing circumstances, demonstrating resilience in outreach efforts.
  • Ethical Standards: Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively within a team and contribute positively to the work environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to engage with individuals in various outdoor settings for extended periods.

  • Stamina to work in diverse weather conditions, as outreach is primarily conducted outdoors.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry supplies, such as food and clothing, weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Good vision and hearing for effective communication and safety in outdoor environments.
