The primary objective of this position is to ensure the seamless operation of manufacturing systems. Our client has established protocols in place, making the maintenance of these systems the foremost priority.

Enhancements and modifications to processes or equipment are secondary yet significant.

Role Overview:


The process automation engineer should possess expertise in the design, configuration, integration, and deployment of process automation solutions for manufacturing environments.

This encompasses the engineering of electrical systems, PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, SQL, Access, and PC networking technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
– Uphold safe work practices consistently.

– Ensure adherence to all relevant standards and protocols (safety, environmental, quality, maintenance, and manufacturing policies) within the designated area.

– Lead or engage in problem-solving initiatives.

– Attain proficiency in existing process, control, and reporting systems.

– Provide ongoing informal and formal training for electrical personnel to foster effective operating and maintenance practices.

– Collaborate with the maintenance team to strategically address downtime prevention and long-term issue resolution while promoting a culture of efficiency and rapid response to downtime incidents.

– Offer backup support to other process automation and electrical supervision staff.

– Work closely with electrical supervisors to maintain comprehensive documentation related to process automation system configurations and standard operating procedures. Strive for continuous improvement of electrical/process automation standards.

– Participate in the planning and budgeting of activities.

– Provide electrical engineering support to sustain production levels.

– Balance immediate operational needs with long-term project goals.

– Engage in equipment troubleshooting.

– Collaborate with maintenance and operational teams to enhance asset performance and continuous improvement initiatives.

– Recommend changes in control schemes to optimize plant operations, potentially increasing efficiency through enhanced automation and improved control methods.

– Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and repair machinery using drawings, schematics, and root-cause analysis.

– Exhibit strong knowledge of engineering principles, including electrical, instrumentation, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.

– Respond to equipment downtime emergencies and develop plans for recurring issues.

– Identify opportunities for condition-based monitoring to predict failures effectively.

– Integrate newer technologies and extend current architectures. Plan and coordinate the technical design and implementation of project work.

– Monitor machinery and system operations to minimize unplanned downtime, proactively solve problems, and identify improvement opportunities.

– Possess working knowledge of steam, natural gas, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

– Experience in capital project design, installation, and startup.

Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

– Minimum of 5 years of manufacturing experience post-degree.

– Background in forest products, paper and pulp, food or beverage processing, or chemical industries is advantageous.

– Strong written and verbal communication skills.

– Familiarity with continuous manufacturing processes.

– Exceptional troubleshooting abilities.

– Knowledge of plant equipment and operational processes.

– Capability to perform full controls integration, from electrical/instrumentation design to PLC to MMI.

– Familiarity with common sensors and transmitters and their application suitability.

– Practical experience with PLCs and Wonderware HMI or equivalent systems.

– Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and respond to callouts as needed.

– Proficient in using personal computers and associated software (MS Suite, Project, Access, SQL, CMMS, AutoCAD, Kronos) and IO Servers.
