Position Overview
This is an on-site role.
This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 13 months, with the possibility of extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. This position does not grant permanent status within the Federal service.
Compensation is determined by the duty location and grade of the position. Locality pay tables are available for reference.
Note: First-time hires to the Federal Government are generally appointed at Step 01.
Eligibility
Key Responsibilities
As a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries) at the Western Fisheries Research Center, your responsibilities will include:
- Designing, implementing, and managing field research initiatives.
- Sampling fish populations utilizing various methodologies.
- Gathering fisheries data and specimens to support scientific investigations.
- Documenting, summarizing, and organizing data.
- Entering, verifying, and managing data within automated databases and geographic information systems.
- Maintaining and repairing research equipment, including sampling tools, photographic devices, electronic instruments, boat motors, and vehicles.
Physical Requirements: The role involves physical exertion, including regular activities such as running, walking, bending, and climbing to collect or record data.
Work Environment: The work setting ranges from laboratory environments to field sites and offices. The position may involve moderate risks and discomforts, including exposure to high noise levels, chemicals, adverse weather conditions, and extreme temperatures, necessitating adherence to specific safety protocols.
This is not a remote position. Telework may be permitted in accordance with the DOI Telework policy and with supervisor approval.
Employment Conditions
Essential Requirements:
- Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
- Must be suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
- The selected candidate may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
- Additional requirements are detailed under Qualifications and Other Information.
- The selected candidate must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain a safe driving record.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination is required.
Special Requirements:
- Driver's License/Driving Record: The selected candidate will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of official duties. Applicants must possess a valid State license and a safe driving record. Proof of a valid State license and a copy of the driving record will be required upon selection.
- Pre-Employment Medical: A pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is mandatory due to the physical demands of this position.
- Travel for Official Business: The selected candidate will need to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals with outstanding balances from a previous Government charge card must resolve those obligations before a new card can be issued.
- A background investigation will be necessary for this position. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to meet these requirements may result in termination.

Qualifications
Specialized experience may include work as a technician or aide in research activities, nursery work involving the cultivation and maintenance of plants in controlled environments, or comparable experience in large dairy operations where production records and sanitary conditions were maintained according to modern practices. Experience that does not involve controlled environments or tasks that do not require planning and scheduling will not qualify as specialized experience.
For GS-05:
To qualify for the GS-5 grade level, applicants must have specialized experience, education, or a combination of both as outlined below.
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service related to the duties of this position. Examples of GS-4 level work include:
- Recording instrument readings.
- Collecting specified samples.
- Taking measurements.
- Operating basic equipment for standardized tests.
- Assisting higher-level technicians with sophisticated equipment.
- Assisting in capturing, tagging, and banding animals or fish.
OR
Education: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of science or a combination of courses related to biology, chemistry, statistics, and other relevant subjects.
OR
Combination: A combination of post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet the qualification requirements for GS-5.
For GS-06:
To qualify for the GS-6 grade level, applicants must have specialized experience, education, or a combination of both as outlined below.
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service related to the duties of this position. Examples of GS-05 level assignments include:
- Collecting insect and disease samples and assisting in identifying and assessing damage.
- Compiling and summarizing data from biological evaluations.
- Maintaining a network of seasonal traps.
- Collecting anatomical materials and assessing habitat preferences.
OR
Graduate Education: Successful completion of 1 year of appropriate graduate-level education in a relevant field may substitute for the required specialized experience.
OR
Combination: A combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education may be used to meet the qualification requirements.
For GS-07:
To qualify for the GS-7 grade level, applicants must have specialized experience, education, or a combination of both as outlined below.
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service related to the duties of this position. Examples of GS-06 level assignments include:
- Collecting insect and disease samples and assisting in identifying and assessing damage.
- Assembling information on fish and wildlife populations.
- Assuming responsibility for limited projects.
- Collecting anatomical materials and assessing habitat preferences.
OR
Graduate Education: Successful completion of 1 year of appropriate graduate-level education in a relevant field may substitute for the required specialized experience.
OR
Combination: A combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education may be used to meet the qualification requirements.
Education: Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work can provide valuable training and experience applicable to paid employment.
