Boulder, Colorado, United States Spire Full time
Job Overview

As a Senior Systems Engineer at Spire, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the technical success of intricate space missions. Your expertise will be essential during the phases of mission contracting and requirements development, collaborating closely with the sales engineering team to validate mission requirements and clearly define the mission scope.

Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that we are effectively "building the right thing" and "building it right". This includes managing system requirements, technical budgets, and sub-system interfaces. You will take charge of the verification and testing processes, ensuring that the technical performance outcomes meet the mission objectives. As the technical lead, you will work alongside both internal teams and external stakeholders, addressing any technical discrepancies that may arise.

In addition, you will serve as the main technical liaison for Spire's global clientele throughout the mission development phases and during the on-orbit validation of our space systems. Your collaborative efforts with project and program managers will be crucial in facilitating effective communication.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assume comprehensive technical ownership of Spire's Space and/or Ground Systems from development through on-orbit verification.
  • Lead the management of requirements for missions or programs, encompassing development, validation, verification, and change management.
  • Oversee technical risk management, including identification, qualification, mitigation, and resolution.
  • Develop high-level requirements and translate them into detailed specifications, collaborating with discipline team leads and subject matter experts.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for customers and contractors, advocating for internal technical teams as necessary.
  • Represent customer interests to Spire's internal teams, ensuring that customer requirements and expectations are communicated effectively.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of Spire's satellite platforms, operational systems, and payloads, including customer APIs and software service interfaces.
  • Proactively inform program/project managers of any changes in scope, requirements, or expected system performance that may impact the mission.
  • Prepare and maintain essential mission documentation for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support the sales engineering team in developing technical concepts, budgets, feasibility assessments, and documentation throughout the sales cycle.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a technical engineering discipline or as a systems engineer for complex integrated systems.
  • In-depth understanding of space systems, operational concepts, and remote systems management.
  • Eligibility to handle ITAR controlled information for candidates based in the US.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience as a space systems engineer across various engineering disciplines.
  • Experience in developing or integrating RF and optical payloads.
  • Involvement in the architecture and design of digital systems, including ground station networks and spacecraft data handling systems.
  • Experience in coordinating or leading diverse technical teams across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships with clients and effectively communicating with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to comprehend complex customer requirements and devise thorough solutions.
  • Experience in satellite mission design, development, and testing, with a clear understanding of mission design trades and scope drivers.

Spire operates under a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office. Access to US export-controlled software and/or technology may be necessary.
