As a Senior Systems Engineer at Spire, you will play a pivotal role in the technical execution of intricate space missions. Your responsibilities will encompass collaborating with the sales engineering team during the mission contracting and requirements development phases to ensure that mission requirements are accurate and the scope is clearly defined.
You will serve as the principal technical authority, ensuring that we are both 'building the right thing' and 'building it right'. This involves managing system requirements, technical budgets, and sub-system interfaces. Your role will also include overseeing the verification and testing processes to guarantee the technical performance outcomes for the mission.
In this capacity, you will act as the technical liaison for both internal teams and external stakeholders, including customers and contractors, to address any technical discrepancies in requirements, specifications, or system performance.
Your diverse technical expertise will enable you to coordinate Spire's technical initiatives effectively, ensuring the success of our missions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assume comprehensive technical ownership of Spire's Space and/or Ground Systems from development through on-orbit validation, ensuring adherence to quality standards.
- Lead the management of requirements for missions or programs, including development, validation, verification, and modifications.
- Oversee technical risk management processes, including identification, qualification, mitigation, and resolution.
- Establish top-level requirements and cascade them to lower-level specifications, collaborating with discipline leads and subject matter experts as needed.
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for customers and contractors, advocating for internal technical teams when necessary.
- Represent customer technical needs to Spire's internal teams, ensuring their requirements and expectations are communicated effectively.
- Gain a thorough understanding of Spire's satellite platforms, operational systems, and payloads, including customer APIs and software service interfaces.
- Communicate proactively with program/project managers regarding any changes in scope, requirements, or expected system performance that may impact the mission.
- Develop and maintain essential mission documentation to support programs or missions, catering to both internal and external audiences.
- Assist the sales engineering team in crafting technical concepts, budgets, feasibility assessments, and documentation necessary during the sales process.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM field, or equivalent professional experience.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in a technical engineering role (Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Controls, RF Communications, etc.) or as a systems engineer for complex integrated systems.
- Thorough understanding of space systems, operational concepts, and remote systems management.
- For candidates in the US, the ability to meet authorization requirements for handling ITAR-controlled information is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of experience as a space systems engineer across various engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Controls, Radio/Comms, etc.).
- Experience in developing or integrating RF and optical payloads.
- Involvement in the architecture and design of digital systems, including ground station networks and spacecraft data handling systems.
- Experience in coordinating or leading diverse technical teams across multiple engineering disciplines and time zones.
- Strong interpersonal skills for fostering relationships with clients and effectively communicating with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to comprehend complex customer requirements and devise thorough and innovative solutions.
- Experience in satellite mission design, development, and testing, with a solid understanding of mission design trade-offs and scope drivers.
Spire promotes a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office.
Access to US export-controlled software and/or technology may be necessary.
