Job Description:

Chief Human Resources Officer

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Office of Human Resources (OHR) as the Chief Human Resources Officer. You will be responsible for overseeing and leading OHR, which encompasses recruitment, engagement, and retention of diverse and high-performing staff. The selected executive will serve as a member of the Academies' senior leadership team while leading and directing the management and administration of strategic, financial, and functional unit activities of the Office of Human Resources (OHR).

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy & Leadership: Aligns human resource and business strategy in consultation with the presidents of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Medicine and senior leaders, the OHR Management Team, and the OHR Advisory Group.Communication & Collaboration: Develops and sustains ongoing working relationships and collaborates effectively with colleagues across the organization and with constituents outside of the organization to share ideas and expertise.Policy & Compliance: Leads and directs the development and consistent implementation of human resources policies and practices throughout the National Academies.Financial Management: Oversees OHR budgets of approximately $50M and a labor footprint of approximately $130M and ensures budget parameters are met.Staff Management: Provides leadership and mentors employees, oversees a team of HR Functional Area Directors and their staffs, trains and develops employees to successfully perform current responsibilities and encourages development of staff for future roles.Assessment & Research: Consults on human resource functional service responsibilities when reviewed by internal and external functional audits, analyzes audit results, and directs improvement to policy, practice, and/or procedure based on audit findings.Vendor Oversight: Leads and directs relationships with third-party vendors, consultants, brokers, actuaries, and trustees in administering the National Academies' human resource programs.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws influencing human resource functions.
  • Experience implementing the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an organization's policies and processes related to staff, products, and services.
  • Ability to manage and maintain privileged, sensitive, and confidential information and matters appropriately.
  • Entrepreneurial orientation and thought leadership to recognize future trends and new opportunities.
  • Transparent approach and political savvy to build and sustain diverse relationships with many constituencies, both internal and external.

Salary and Benefits:

The estimated salary range for this position is $199,780 - $349,620. The position also offers comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, disability coverage, retirement, and education assistance.

Work Environment:

This is a hybrid office/telecommute environment with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and off-site meeting locations.
