ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Community Development Department (CDD) serves as the planning agency for the City of Cambridge. CDD is dedicated to promoting a livable, sustainable, equitable, and just community. The Environment/Sustainability team is primarily responsible for coordinating the City’s initiatives aimed at achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing climate resilience.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
Cambridge's Net Zero Action Plan outlines the City’s climate strategy for buildings, detailing policies and programs designed to attain net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. Achieving this ambitious target necessitates the decarbonization of buildings through electrification, efficiency improvements, and access to renewable energy sources. Recently, Cambridge enacted one of the most rigorous building performance standards in the nation, mandating that the largest nonresidential buildings achieve net zero by 2035. The City is committed to implementing these standards and assisting building owners in their decarbonization efforts. Key initiatives include promoting residential electrification at scale, expanding access to renewable electricity, and testing innovative retrofit financing models. The Building Decarbonization Intern will play a vital role in supporting the execution of these initiatives and exploring new strategies for building decarbonization within Cambridge.

- Supporting the Cambridge Climate Committee in its advisory role concerning the equitable execution of the Net Zero Action Plan.
- Investigating advancements in climate policy, programs, and emerging decarbonization solutions to enhance Cambridge's strategic approach.
- Assisting with additional energy and climate-related tasks as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- Ability to adapt and excel in a fast-paced, independent, and dynamic work environment.
- The City of Cambridge values diversity in its workforce, reflecting the community it serves. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from diverse identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.
