The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) serves as the cornerstone of a liberal arts education at Stanford University. POSITION SUMMARY: The Department of Biology is in search of a Laboratory Services Manager to enhance the operations of the Shatz Lab. This role requires working under the general supervision of Carla Shatz and necessitates a positive approach towards continuous improvement initiatives while fostering a team-oriented and customer-centric environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, effective communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, and strong relationship management capabilities. A commitment to ongoing learning about new and relevant business topics, policies, and procedures is essential for translating this knowledge into operational success. The Lab Manager should possess prior technical experience in equipment maintenance, repair coordination, vendor communication, and laboratory practices including cell culture, imaging, video microscopy, DNA isolation, and protein engineering.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position. The role will be based on the Stanford campus and may offer a hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational requirements.

CORE DUTIES:

  1. Oversee the management and operation of a research or teaching facility; coordinate and schedule equipment usage.
  2. Negotiate and oversee service contracts and warranties with equipment vendors.
  3. Assess equipment requirements, authorize purchases, and supervise installation in collaboration with facilities staff.
  4. Coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs for all equipment; determine appropriate repair methods.
  5. Manage space allocation and logistics for multiple laboratories; facilitate laboratory relocations and renovation plans in partnership with facilities staff.
  6. Administer and prepare budgets encompassing various funding sources.
  7. Implement health and safety programs, ensuring compliance; serve as a resource for safety procedures and provide regular training; liaise with health and safety offices as necessary.
  8. Supervise other staff, including hiring, promotions, and terminations; assess staffing needs and ensure effective staff utilization.
  9. Additional duties may be assigned as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

· Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of the needs of academic research facilities.
  • General knowledge in a discipline relevant to the specific laboratory(s).
  • Proven supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing multiple budgets effectively.
  • Knowledge of facility management, operations, maintenance, and equipment administration in a research or educational context.
  • Exceptional communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a complex technical environment.
  • Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require working in environments where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present, including chemicals, pesticides, and solvents.
  • May involve exposure to environments where animals are utilized for research and teaching.
  • Potential exposure to radiation or electromagnetic fields.
  • Must use personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, and protective clothing.
  • May require extended or unusual hours due to research demands and peak work cycles. Availability for after-hours on-call duties may be necessary.

The expected salary range for this position is $82,000 to $94,000 annually.

Stanford University provides salary ranges that reflect its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for this position. The final pay offered will be determined based on various factors including the scope of responsibilities, qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for similar roles.
