POSITION SUMMARY: The Department of Biology is in search of a Laboratory Services Manager to facilitate the operations of the Shatz Lab. The Lab Services Manager will operate under the general supervision of Carla Shatz and is expected to demonstrate a proactive approach to continuous process improvement while maintaining a team-oriented and customer-centric attitude. It is essential for this role to exhibit sound judgment and decision-making capabilities, effective written and verbal communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to manage respectful relationships. A strong desire to learn new and unfamiliar business topics, policies, and procedures related to core responsibilities is crucial, as the ability to translate this knowledge into operational success will be vital. The Lab Manager should possess prior technical experience in equipment maintenance, addressing repair needs, and communicating effectively with vendors, technicians, and facilities managers, along with lab experience in cell culture, imaging, video microscopy, DNA isolation, and protein engineering.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position. The role will be based on the Stanford campus and may offer a hybrid work arrangement, contingent upon operational requirements.

CORE DUTIES:

  1. Oversee the management and operation of a research or teaching facility; coordinate and schedule the use of equipment and/or facilities.
  2. Negotiate and oversee equipment service contracts and warranties with vendors.
  3. Assess equipment needs, authorize purchases, and supervise the installation of equipment and instruments in collaboration with facilities services staff.
  4. Perform and/or coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs for all equipment; determine appropriate repair methods.
  5. Manage the layout, allocation, and tracking of space among multiple labs; handle logistics for laboratory relocations; implement renovation plans for equipment and/or facilities in partnership with facilities services staff.
  6. Administer and prepare budgets that encompass multiple funding sources.
  7. Oversee health and safety programs to ensure compliance; serve as a resource for safety procedures; provide routine instruction; liaise with the health and safety office as necessary.
  8. Direct the work of other staff, including supervision, hiring, promotions, and terminations; assess staffing needs and ensure efficient staff utilization.
  9. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

· Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of the needs of academic research facilities.
  • General background in a discipline related to the work of specific labs.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing multiple budgets.
  • Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research or teaching environment.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical setting.
  • Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May occasionally be required to work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present, including chemicals, pesticides, solvents, allergens, and blood-borne pathogens.
  • May require work in environments where animals are utilized for teaching and research.
  • Exposure to radiation or electromagnetic fields may occur.
  • Tasks may require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, protective clothing, and gloves.
  • Extended or unusual work hours may be necessary due to research or project demands and peak work cycles. After-hours on-call availability may be required.

The expected salary range for this position is $82,000 to $94,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
