About Karius

Karius is a pioneering life sciences startup dedicated to revolutionizing the diagnosis of infectious diseases. By integrating Next-Generation Sequencing with advanced data analytics, we can detect over 1,000 human pathogens from a single blood sample, typically within one business day. Our innovative approach, which utilizes microbial cell-free DNA, empowers healthcare professionals to swiftly address complex medical cases, with aspirations to enhance clinical trials, uncover new pathogens, and alleviate patient suffering globally.

Position Overview

The success of Karius's groundbreaking technologies hinges on robust computing and data frameworks, software architecture, and a suite of research and engineering tools, collectively referred to as the Karius R&D/Ops platform. In this pivotal engineering position, you will work in close collaboration with the engineering and scientific leadership to define the strategic vision for the technology that underpins this platform. Your role will involve crafting and executing a technology roadmap aimed at developing and maintaining a scalable, secure, and reliable platform.

Why Karius?

At Karius, our mission is to combat infectious diseases through cutting-edge genomic sequencing and machine learning innovations. Our platform offers unparalleled insights into the microbial ecosystem, enabling clinicians to conduct comprehensive tests that identify thousands of pathogens directly from blood samples. As a key member of one of Karius's most innovative teams, your contributions will have a profound impact on our core engineering platform and will directly influence the lives of patients battling infectious diseases.

Reporting Structure

This position reports to the Vice President of Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee architectural initiatives from inception to completion, ensuring timely delivery while adhering to budgetary and quality standards.
  • Create architectural designs, frameworks, and guidelines for the development and operation of the platform.
  • Ensure that the architecture aligns with both technical and business requirements, including security, performance, interoperability, and scalability.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure the platform utilizes optimal solutions.
  • Effectively communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Develop, document, and organize strategic artifacts, including technical proposals, designs, and risk assessments.
  • Guarantee that Karius's R&D and engineering teams have access to the necessary infrastructure, tools, and processes for productivity.
  • Ensure the platform is cloud vendor agnostic, can be provisioned globally using infrastructure as code, and complies with regional privacy and security regulations.
  • Facilitate the platform's provisioning for external laboratories, enabling them to utilize Karius products.

What Makes This Role Exciting?

Karius operates at the forefront of infectious disease diagnostics, presenting a unique array of challenges and opportunities. You will engage with advanced technologies, architecting solutions that surpass conventional offerings to meet the complexities and scale of our operations. If you thrive in building sophisticated distributed systems and enjoy tackling unique challenges, this role will be rewarding. Your influence will extend across technical and organizational domains, enhancing the capabilities of Karius's engineering, science, and operations teams through innovative platform developments.

Travel Requirements

Travel may be required up to 10%.

Physical Demands

This role may involve extended periods of sitting and standing, visual monitoring, and exposure to moderate noise levels, typically in an office environment.

Qualifications

We seek candidates who have successfully designed and managed multiple complex, high-quality, regulated, and scalable cloud-native platforms. Demonstrate your technical, interpersonal, and organizational skills in translating intricate business and technical requirements into a distinctive platform that serves as a competitive advantage for Karius.

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Genetics, or a related field; a Ph.D. is highly desirable.
  • 15+ years of engineering experience, with at least 10 years in leading the development and operation of distributed software systems and cloud-native platforms.
  • Expertise in infrastructure-as-code design and tools such as Terraform.
  • Extensive knowledge of design patterns, implementation, testing, and failure management of distributed systems and microservices.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native software development and operations, utilizing tools and technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud services for software services and data analytics.
  • Familiarity with industry security standards such as NIST CSF/SSDF and practical experience in implementing and monitoring cloud security controls.
  • Experience with various code flow and DevOps methodologies, including gitOps.
  • Proven track record of building trust, influencing cross-functional teams, and leading change initiatives.
  • Ability to articulate and present complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Experience in healthcare and life sciences, particularly in developing medical devices, is a significant advantage.
