About Karius
Karius is an innovative life sciences startup dedicated to revolutionizing the diagnosis of infectious diseases. By leveraging Next-Generation Sequencing and proprietary data analytics, we can detect over 1,000 human pathogens from a single blood sample, typically within one business day. Our mission is to unlock the potential of microbial cell-free DNA, enabling healthcare professionals to resolve complex cases swiftly, with aspirations to enhance clinical trials, discover new microbes, and alleviate patient suffering globally.
Position Overview
The research, development, and operation of Karius's groundbreaking technologies are fundamentally reliant on robust computing and data infrastructure, software architecture, and various research and engineering tools, collectively referred to as the Karius R&D/Ops platform. In this pivotal engineering position, you will work closely with the engineering and scientific leadership to define the strategic vision for the technology underpinning this platform. You will also create and implement a technology roadmap to ensure the development and operation of a scalable, secure, and reliable platform.
Why Work with Us?
Karius is on a mission to combat infectious diseases through advancements in genomic sequencing and machine learning. Our platform provides unparalleled insights into the microbial ecosystem, equipping clinicians with a comprehensive testing solution capable of identifying over a thousand pathogens directly from blood samples. As a vital member of one of Karius's most innovative teams, you will have the opportunity to influence and drive essential components of our core engineering platform, witnessing the significant impact of your work on patients affected by infectious diseases.
Reporting Structure
This role reports to the Vice President of Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
• Spearheading architectural initiatives from inception to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
• Crafting architectural frameworks, blueprints, and guidelines for the development and operation of the platform.
• Guaranteeing that the architecture fulfills both technical and business requirements, including security, performance, interoperability, and scalability.
• Keeping abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure the platform utilizes the most suitable technologies.
• Clearly articulating and presenting complex concepts to both technical and business stakeholders.
• Developing, documenting, and organizing key artifacts such as strategies, technical proposals, designs, and risk assessments.
• Ensuring that Karius's R&D and engineering teams have access to the necessary infrastructure, tools, and processes for optimal productivity.
• Ensuring the Karius platform is cloud vendor agnostic, can be provisioned globally using a blueprint as code, and complies with regional privacy and security regulations.
• Facilitating the provisioning of the platform for external laboratories, enabling them to utilize Karius products.
What Makes This Role Exciting?
Karius operates at the forefront of infectious disease diagnostics, presenting a range of new challenges and opportunities. In this role, you will engage with advanced technologies, architecting solutions where existing out-of-the-box options fall short of meeting our complexity and scale. If you thrive on building sophisticated distributed systems and enjoy tackling unique challenges, you will find this role rewarding. This position holds significant technical and organizational influence, enhancing the knowledge and skills of the Karius engineering, science, and operations teams through the innovations integrated into the platform.
Travel Requirements
Occasional travel may be required, up to 10%.
Physical Demands
This role may involve extended periods of sitting and standing, visual monitoring, and exposure to moderate noise levels. Work is conducted in an office environment.
Qualifications
We seek candidates who have successfully designed and operated multiple complex, high-quality, regulated, reliable, and scalable cloud-native platforms. You should possess the technical, interpersonal, and organizational skills necessary to translate intricate business and technical requirements into a unique platform that serves as a sustainable competitive advantage for Karius.
• A B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Genetics, or a related field is required. A Ph.D. in these areas is a significant advantage.
• A minimum of 15 years of engineering experience, with at least 10 years focused on leading the development and operation of distributed software systems and cloud-native platforms.
• Expertise in infrastructure-as-code design and tools such as Terraform.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in design patterns, implementation, testing, and failure management of distributed systems and microservices.
• Practical experience with cloud-native software development and operations, primarily utilizing tools and technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud services for software services and data analytics.
• Proficiency in industry security standards, such as NIST CSF/SSDF, with hands-on experience in implementing and monitoring cloud security controls.
• Familiarity with various code flow and DevOps methodologies, including gitOps.
• Proven track record of leading architectural projects from concept to completion, ensuring timely delivery and compliance with budget and quality standards.
• Experience in the healthcare and life sciences sectors, particularly in developing medical devices, is a significant plus.
Personal Attributes
We are looking for a humble, curious, and collaborative individual to join our team. At Karius, we value deep domain expertise, a drive for innovation, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for solving challenging problems that have a meaningful impact on the world. A sense of ownership and accountability is essential for fostering a productive and high-performing team environment. If you share our vision, we would be pleased to consider your application.
