Position Overview: This part-time role focuses on delivering educational services to students with visual impairments. The position is based in the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles regions.

Classification: EdLogical

Employment Status: Non-Exempt

Compensation: $45.00 to $55.00 per hour

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assess students using appropriate criterion and/or norm-referenced assessments to determine their visual functioning levels and needs across various domains, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-help, academics, vocational education, and cognitive abilities.
  • Develop individualized education plans (IEPs) with measurable goals and objectives based on assessments and knowledge of child development.
  • Create a supportive learning environment.
  • Provide direct instruction in specialized skills, including braille literacy, orientation and mobility, auditory skills, tactile skills, visual efficiency, concept development, and the use of large print and optical aids.
  • Assist in determining eligibility for regular education placement when appropriate.
  • Support students in integrating into mainstream education programs.
  • Teach students how to articulate their disabilities.
  • Make referrals to additional programs and services as needed.
  • Consult with regular classroom teachers, providing resources and assistance while developing curriculum activities aligned with student objectives.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Prepare daily lesson plans and schedules.
  • Utilize diverse materials and teaching methods.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and attend required meetings.
  • Work in various educational settings as assigned.
  • Exhibit physical, mental, and emotional stamina to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity for various tasks.
  • Maintain physical mobility to navigate the work environment and respond to emergencies.
  • Lift and carry items as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • California Teaching Credential for visually impaired programs.
  • Expertise in techniques for working with visually impaired individuals, including braille and assistive technology.
  • Background in orientation and mobility.
  • Knowledge of Braille technology and large print resources.
  • Strong organizational and planning capabilities.
  • First Aid and CPR certification within six months of employment.
Abilities:
  • Possess a valid California driver's license and be insurable.
  • Establish cooperative relationships with staff and the public.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Clear background checks as required.
  • Pro-Act, CPI, and/or CPR certification is advantageous.
Desirable Experience:
  • Experience with children with visual impairments from birth to 21 years.
  • Experience with children with severe disabilities.
  • Teaching experience in general education settings.
  • Ability to use sign language.
  • Bilingual capabilities.
Work Environment:
  • Occasional exposure to dust and allergens.
  • Frequent physical activity, including lifting and moving.
  • Must have normal vision and hearing capabilities.
  • Moderate to high noise levels may be present.
