About City Harvest:
City Harvest stands as New York's pioneering and largest food rescue organization, dedicated to alleviating hunger for millions of New Yorkers facing food insecurity. Over our four decades of service, we have successfully rescued over one billion pounds of fresh, nutritious food, distributing it—at no cost—to numerous food pantries, soup kitchens, community partners, and our Mobile Markets throughout the five boroughs. This year, we are on track to rescue and distribute over 77 million pounds of essential food to our neighbors in need. City Harvest collaborates with community partners to enhance local capacity, expand nutrition education, and fortify local food systems. Since our inception in 1982, City Harvest has consistently worked to nourish our city—one day, one meal, one New Yorker at a time.
Position Overview:
City Harvest is in search of a Donor Relations Specialist with 3-5 years of experience in fundraising to join our dynamic fundraising team. The ideal candidate is a driven, strategic, and seasoned fundraiser with a proven track record in identifying, soliciting, cultivating, and securing individual contributions.
This role presents an exciting opportunity to be part of a high-performing, vibrant team during a crucial phase in City Harvest's journey. The Individual Giving team is a collaborative, results-oriented, and passionate group, and this position will focus on the stewardship of individual donors.
The Donor Relations Specialist will concentrate on mid-level donors (those capable of contributing at least $10,000) and will be responsible for nurturing relationships to educate, inspire, and engage these supporters of City Harvest. This individual will work in partnership with the External Relations team (including Special Events, Business Partnerships, Marketing and Communications, Institutional Partnerships, and Volunteer teams) to cultivate and engage prospects and supporters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a portfolio of individual donors capable of making gifts of at least $10,000. Engage with key long-term, new, and prospective donors to contribute significantly to the department's annual revenue goal exceeding $13M.
- Develop, implement, and monitor strategies for all donors within the assigned portfolio. Translate both short and long-term strategies into targeted goals and actions to enhance donor satisfaction and achieve year-over-year renewals, with an emphasis on upgrading Direct Response donors into mid-level and major gift supporters.
- Collaborate with colleagues on the Individual Giving team to create cultivation, appeal, and stewardship strategies for mid-level donors. Introduce innovative ideas for donor engagement.
- In partnership with the Special Events and Individual Giving team, oversee cultivation events for both new and existing donors.
- Work closely with other members of the External Relations team and across the organization to ensure optimal utilization of City Harvest resources for donor cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation.
- Become a knowledgeable advocate for City Harvest, excelling in articulating our mission. Serve as a spokesperson for the organization as needed to attract funding, volunteers, and other support. Collaborate with various departments to organize site visits that showcase our work to donors and potential supporters.
- Undertake related projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- City Harvest requires all new employees to work onsite at least 3 days per week.
- A minimum of three years of fundraising (or equivalent) experience.
- At least two years of direct experience soliciting individual gifts, consistently meeting or exceeding revenue targets. Experience in a major gift environment that frequently utilizes special events is advantageous.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate strong relationships with donors, possessing the presence and personal style to represent the organization to various stakeholders.
- Ability to function effectively both as part of a team and independently. Enjoys collaboration and thrives in cross-functional teams.
- The ideal candidate will provide outstanding customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Analytical approach to fundraising, particularly in prioritizing donors and identifying prospects. Comfortable working with numbers, budgets, and data.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to focus on both immediate and long-term objectives.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Effective problem-solving skills.
- The ideal individual adapts well to changes in a fast-paced work environment and manages multiple projects and deadlines with ease.
- A sense of humor and a curiosity to learn.
- Proficiency in database management, preferably Raisers Edge.
- Availability for evening and weekend donor visits and events as required.
Why Choose City Harvest?
Choosing a career with City Harvest comes with numerous benefits. In addition to combating food insecurity in New York, City Harvest offers:
- Competitive market salaries.
