Job Overview

The role of a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) involves providing essential peer support services, advocating for individuals in recovery, and sharing valuable coping strategies and recovery information. The CPS is responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at empowering individuals to take charge of their recovery journey. This includes fostering natural support systems, enhancing social interactions within the community, and managing symptoms that may hinder personal wellness.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Program Director or Site Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Care Duties:

  • Provide peer support services, including education and advocacy, to encourage engagement in the treatment process.
  • Deliver recovery support education to individuals enrolled, staff, and family members, which may encompass:
    • Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) for participants,
    • Self-help and mutual peer support groups,
    • Orientation and training for new participants,
    • Training for staff and team members.
  • Facilitate person-centered interventions as outlined in service plans for all individuals served.
  • Conduct group therapy sessions as appropriate, including:
    • WRAP sessions,
    • Recovery Support Groups,
    • Community Meetings,
    • Symptom Management and Coping Skills sessions.
  • Assist individuals in preparing for independent living.

Administrative Duties:

  • Ensure timely completion of required documentation in accordance with agency policies.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain personal physical, mental, and emotional well-being to effectively model healthy functioning for those served.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the leadership team to support individuals' recovery.
Qualifications
  • Certification as a Certified Peer Specialist.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working with individuals in Mental Health Recovery.
  • Commitment to completing 18 credit hours of additional training annually.
Physical Requirements

Lifting Requirements: Medium: ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Physical Activities:

  • Stand or sit in a stationary position.
  • Walk and use hands or fingers for various tasks.
  • Climb stairs or ladders.
  • Communicate effectively and visually assess situations.
  • Engage in pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions.
  • Reach high or low and perform kneeling, stooping, crouching, or crawling as necessary.
