Job Overview

The role of a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) involves providing essential peer support services, advocating for individuals in recovery, and sharing valuable coping strategies and recovery information. The CPS is responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at empowering individuals to take charge of their recovery journey. This includes fostering natural support systems, enhancing social interactions within the community, and managing symptoms that may hinder personal wellness. A strong commitment to the values upheld by Resources for Human Development is essential in fulfilling these responsibilities.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Program Director or Site Supervisor.

*** Hiring Bonus: $1,500 ***

Key Responsibilities

Direct Support

  • Provide peer support services, including education and advocacy, to encourage active participation in the treatment process.
  • Deliver recovery education to individuals enrolled in programs, staff, and family members, which may encompass:
    • Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) for participants,
    • Self-help and mutual support groups,
    • Orientation and training for new participants,
    • Training and orientation for staff and team members.
  • Support person-centered interventions as outlined in individual service plans.
  • Facilitate group therapy sessions as needed, which may include:
    • WRAP sessions,
    • Recovery Support Groups,
    • Community Meetings,
    • Symptom Management and Coping Skills sessions.
  • Assist individuals in preparing for independent living.

Administrative Duties

  • Ensure timely completion of required documentation in accordance with agency policies.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain personal physical, mental, and emotional well-being to effectively model healthy functioning for those served.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the leadership team to support individual recovery efforts.
Qualifications
  • Certification as a Certified Peer Specialist.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with individuals in mental health recovery.
  • Commitment to complete 18 credit hours of additional training annually.
Physical Requirements

Lifting Requirements: Medium – the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Physical Activities:

  • Standing or sitting for extended periods.
  • Walking.
  • Using hands or fingers for various tasks.
  • Climbing stairs or ladders.
  • Communicating effectively.
  • Visual acuity for detecting and assessing situations.
  • Pushing or pulling objects.
  • Repetitive motions.
  • Reaching in various directions.
  • Kneeling, stooping, crouching, or crawling as necessary.
