Position Overview

Summary: Under the guidance of the Chemistry Supervisor, the Lead Laboratory Technologist leverages extensive practical and theoretical expertise in Clinical Chemistry, Immunology, and Special Chemistry to support the Chemistry Laboratory's operations. This role serves as a key resource for departmental technologists and encompasses a variety of responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are integral to this position:

  1. Conduct analysis of blood, body fluids, and urine specimens in accordance with established Chemistry Department protocols.
  2. Assess test outcomes for irregularities and significant deviations, ensuring accuracy before results are disseminated.
  3. Alert relevant patient care teams regarding critical and STAT results.
  4. Provide assistance to technologists in resolving instrument malfunctions as needed.
  5. Engage in the assessment of new products and methodologies.
  6. Facilitate training for staff members.
  7. Adhere to all regulatory standards and guidelines.
  8. Collaborate with pathologists, medical staff, and other hospital personnel as required.
  9. Support supervisory staff with the Glucose Point of Care initiative.
Managerial Duties

In the absence of supervisory personnel, or as directed by supervisory staff or the Laboratory Administrative Director, the following tasks may be performed:

  1. Manage payroll timekeeping.
  2. Assist in the accurate processing of NYS and CAP Proficiency programs.
  3. Draft and update departmental procedures and protocols in collaboration with the laboratory supervisor.
  4. Exhibit proactive planning and follow-up on projects.
  5. Notify supervisory staff and relevant personnel of issues or situations that require attention, demonstrating effective problem recognition and analysis.
  6. Maintain inventory of all chemistry supplies and submit purchase requests as necessary.
  7. Contribute to Quality Control programs and evaluations.
  8. Foster a positive working environment within the department.
  9. Communicate results and issues to appropriate patient care areas.
  10. Participate in both external (NYS and CAP) and internal proficiency assessments.
  11. Assume responsibility for Quality Control tasks as assigned.
  12. Report non-conformances, adverse events, and unusual occurrences to leadership.
  13. Perform additional duties as assigned.
  14. Understand and comply with the hospital's Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors.
Qualifications
  • Possession of a New York State Clinical Technologist license is mandatory.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Technology or a related scientific field, accompanied by four years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • ASCP certification is preferred.

Potential exposure to chemicals necessary for job functions. Hazardous chemicals are documented in the hospital's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database, accessible via the hospital's Intranet. A copy of the SDS database is also available at the hospital switchboard.

  • Capability to detect and respond to emergency sounds and signals at all times.
  • Proficiency in operating computers, equipment, and other devices continuously.
  • Capacity to focus on detailed tasks despite interruptions for extended durations.
