Position Summary:

The Laboratory Supervisor is tasked with overseeing and managing all functions within the Chemistry and Immunology laboratories, ensuring optimal testing quality and adherence to regulatory standards. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Comprehend and comply with established Performance Standards, Policies, and Behavioral Expectations.
  2. Guarantee the provision of high-quality clinical services in line with hospital and regulatory accreditation standards.
  3. Ensure staff adherence to hospital and Human Resources policies and procedures.
  4. Verify that employee competency and educational prerequisites are met according to hospital guidelines.
  5. Participate in the Performance Improvement Program as outlined by the organization.
  6. Attend Management and Leadership meetings as required, conveying essential information to staff regarding hospital policies and performance improvement initiatives.
  7. Engage in committees, task forces, and projects as deemed appropriate.
  8. Ensure a safe environment for both employees and patients.
  9. Maintain up-to-date knowledge regarding departmental operations.
  10. Collaborate effectively with all levels of the interdisciplinary team, promoting teamwork within the department and across the hospital.
  11. Exhibit exemplary customer service, fostering positive employee relations and ensuring adherence to Customer Service Behavioral Standards.
  12. Support hospital initiatives and act as a positive change agent.
  13. Project a professional image and serve as a role model, coach, mentor, and resource for staff and colleagues.
  14. Supervise and direct testing conducted by Chemistry Scientists.
  15. Provide training and assistance to Scientists on specialized tests; interpret results for physicians and recommend follow-up tests as necessary.
  16. Oversee the Quality Control Program and prepare monthly Quality Control reports for departmental meetings.
  17. Manage section payroll and timekeeping.
  18. Stay informed about regulatory standards from accrediting agencies to ensure compliance in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory.
  19. Document test implementation and staff training.
  20. Oversee and review Point-of-Care Glucose testing for the laboratory.
  21. Facilitate effective communication within and outside the Laboratory Department.
  22. Establish a Quality Assurance Program for the Chemistry Section, including active review of technologists' performance and compliance, Quality Control, and test results.
  23. Assist in the development of effective laboratory/computer software utilization, including instrument interfacing, tests, worksheets, and report formatting.
  24. Troubleshoot instrument malfunctions as needed.
  25. Monitor turnaround times for relevant Chemistry, Special Chemistry, and Reference Tests.
  26. Perform duties of Sectional Scientist and Assistant Supervisor as required.
  27. Develop and submit departmental goals and objectives as required by the Division Administrator.
  28. Conduct interviews, evaluations, counseling, and terminations in accordance with hospital policy.
  29. Ensure completion of staff orientation and ongoing competency and education requirements.
  30. Participate in educational programs to maintain current knowledge and expertise for departmental management.
  31. Utilize various methodologies to communicate information effectively.
  32. Adhere to safety standards for employees and patients.
  33. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Laboratories or their designee.

Education & Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Technology or a related scientific field with a minimum of six years of relevant hospital experience. A Master's Degree in Clinical Chemistry is preferred, along with ASCP or NCA Certification. A current NYS License or eligibility for licensure is required.

Physical/Mental Demands & Work Environment:

Exposure to chemicals necessary for task completion may occur. Hazardous chemicals are listed in the hospital's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database, accessible through the hospital's Intranet.

Primary Population Served:

Neonatal, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric, and Bariatric patients, as well as those with exceptional communication needs and cultural considerations.
