Job Overview

Position Summary: The Animal Care Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and well-being of laboratory animals within a controlled environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a sterile workspace while caring for immune-compromised mice, utilizing aseptic practices.
  • Conduct routine animal husbandry and ensure overall welfare.
  • Change cages and provide fresh bedding and materials for mice in the vivarium.
  • Monitor and document animal health, behavior, and physical condition.
  • Report observations and assist with basic veterinary care as directed by veterinary professionals.
  • Perform sanitation tasks for the vivarium, including cleaning animal and procedure rooms.
  • Engage in routine decontamination of vivarium spaces and instruments.
  • Document environmental monitoring data accurately.
  • Manage biowaste disposal through autoclaving procedures.
  • Utilize fogging methods for thorough decontamination of vivarium areas.
  • Monitor and record temperatures of freezers and refrigerators.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including data entry and computer systems.
  • Keep precise and comprehensive records of studies conducted.
  • Assist in managing vivarium supply inventories, including stocking and ordering supplies.
  • Participate in weekend and holiday shifts as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of 2 years' experience in a laboratory animal facility.
  • Understanding of animal welfare regulations and ethical considerations in research.
  • Ability to maintain meticulous records of experimental procedures.
  • Detail-oriented with strong multitasking capabilities.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Proficient in computer use, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in dosing animals, tissue collection, and tumor measurements is advantageous.
