Under the direct oversight of the Animal Facility Manager, and occasionally guided by the Lead Husbandry Technician, the Husbandry Technician I will undertake essential cage washing and husbandry tasks related to the care of laboratory research mice.

This role encompasses a variety of responsibilities crucial for maintaining vital vivarium operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

All activities are conducted in accordance with institutional and industry Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Cage Washing Responsibilities ~70%

  • Responsible for washing and replenishing water bottles; operates the automatic bottle filling machine.
  • Disposes of soiled bedding from used rodent cages.
  • Cleans rodent cages and associated caging accessories.
  • Operates tunnel washers and rack washer machines.
  • Organizes cleaned cages and accessories.
  • Prepares cages for autoclaving and operates the steam autoclave.
  • Utilizes the bedding dispenser and adds nesting material to bedding-filled cages.
  • Maintains cleanliness in the cage washrooms, including cleaning cage washing machines.
  • Performs additional cleaning tasks in vivarium support areas, such as mopping floors and cleaning windows and counters.
  • Restocks supplies as necessary in cage washrooms and support areas.
  • Handles BSL-2 waste disposal (e.g., animal waste).
  • Participates in mandatory Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and departmental training sessions.
  • Conducts euthanasia procedures.
  • Cleans and maintains assigned animal rooms, surrounding support areas, and procedure labs.
  • Prepares cleaning solutions and labels stock solutions with preparation dates.
  • Receives and rotates animal feed and bedding; labels feed with mill, open, and expiration dates.

Husbandry Responsibilities ~30%

  • Inspects cages daily for sufficient food and water, replenishing as necessary.
  • Changes cages according to the established 10-day cycle.
  • Verifies accuracy of cage cards and corrects information as needed.
  • Maintains activity logs and husbandry records for animal rooms.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of changing hoods, ventilated animal housing racks, and related equipment.
  • Conducts daily health checks on animals and reports any health concerns to Laboratory Animal Technicians (LATs).
  • Restocks room supplies and maintains shared storage and procedure support areas.
Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to pass post-employment physical as mandated by OLAW (Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare).
  • Capability to work in an environment containing animal dander and dust particles.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions with arms, wrists, and hands; regular bending and lifting, sitting and standing on hard surfaces, and pushing and pulling carts loaded with cages and accessories.
  • Must be able to lift and stack feed and bedding bags weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Required to wear institution-provided scrubs, face masks, shoe covers, hair bonnets, and other task-related personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work one of the defined schedules: 6:30-3:00 or 7:00-3:30, Monday through Friday.
  • Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with good interpersonal abilities.
  • Possesses effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Adheres to departmental and institutional safety and occupational health policies while demonstrating proficiency in safety protocols.
  • Maintains compliance with all training requirements.
  • Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, and LabTracks.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not entail any formal supervisory responsibilities.

Compensation:

The anticipated compensation for this role ranges from $19 to $21 per hour, based on experience.
