About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Animal Care Specialist to join our Insourcing Solutions team at Charles River Laboratories. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and well-being of our research animals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and maintain the health and welfare of research animals, performing daily health observations and reporting any concerns to the on-site Supervisor or facility veterinarian.
  • Perform animal husbandry duties, including daily water bottle and cage checks, providing food and water, and performing cage changing and cleaning as required.
  • Conduct cage wash duties and sanitation, maintaining a clean and safe environment for the animals.
  • Record and maintain accurate records of room logs, health case logs, animal breeding, and support areas as required by Institute and facility protocols.
  • Perform rodent restraint, handling, and technical manipulation as assigned by the on-site Supervisor or facility veterinarian, including health case treatments, identification, genotyping, health surveillance sampling, and euthanasia.
  • Receive, inspect, and put away incoming animal shipments and supplies, ensuring they meet quality and safety standards.
  • Operate equipment and use supplies according to guidelines, maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures, maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
  • May provide study support on non-invasive techniques, including animal fasting, body weight, food and water measurement, mating, plug check, etc.
Requirements
  • High school diploma, General Education Degree (G.E.D.) or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in animal or life sciences field preferred.
  • Minimum of one year related laboratory animal experience required.
  • AALAS certification at the ALAT level/CALAS preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
