Under the direct oversight of the Animal Facility Manager, and occasionally guided by the Lead Husbandry Technician, the Husbandry Technician I will engage in both cage sanitation and husbandry tasks related to the maintenance of laboratory research mice.
This role encompasses a variety of essential activities vital for the seamless operation of the vivarium.
Duties and Responsibilities:All tasks are executed in accordance with institutional and industry Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Cage Sanitation Responsibilities ~70%
- Sanitizes and replenishes water containers; operates the automated bottle filling equipment.
- Disposes of soiled bedding from used rodent enclosures.
- Cleans rodent cages and associated caging components.
- Utilizes the tunnel washer and rack washer machinery.
- Organizes cleaned cages and accessories.
- Prepares cages for autoclaving and operates the steam sterilizer.
- Uses the bedding dispenser and adds nesting materials to filled cages.
- Maintains cleanliness in the cage washrooms, including cleaning the washing machines.
- Performs additional cleaning tasks in vivarium support areas, such as mopping floors and cleaning surfaces.
- Restocks necessary supplies in cage washrooms and support areas.
- Handles BSL-2 waste disposal (e.g., animal waste).
- Participates in mandatory environmental health and safety training sessions.
- Conducts euthanasia procedures as required.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization in assigned animal rooms and related support areas.
- Prepares and labels cleaning solutions with preparation dates.
- Receives and organizes animal feed and bedding; labels feed with relevant dates.
Husbandry Responsibilities ~30%
- Monitors cages daily for sufficient food and water, replenishing as necessary.
- Changes cages according to the established 10-day cycle.
- Verifies accuracy of cage cards and updates information as needed.
- Keeps detailed logs of animal room activities and husbandry records.
- Maintains changing hoods, ventilated animal housing racks, and related equipment.
- Conducts daily health assessments of animals and reports any health issues to Laboratory Animal Technicians (LATs).
- Restocks room supplies and manages shared storage and procedure support areas.
- High School diploma or G.E.D. is required.
- Ability to pass a post-employment physical as mandated by OLAW (Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare).
- Ability to work in an environment with animal dander and dust particles.
- Ability to perform repetitive motions with arms, wrists, and hands; regular bending and lifting, sitting and standing on hard surfaces, and pushing/pulling carts loaded with cages and accessories.
- Ability to lift and stack feed and bedding bags weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Must wear institution-provided scrubs, face masks, shoe covers, hair bonnets, and other necessary personal protective equipment.
- Ability to adhere to one of the defined work schedules.
- Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with good interpersonal abilities.
- Possesses effective time management and organizational skills.
- Complies with departmental and institutional safety and occupational health policies and procedures while demonstrating competency in safety protocols.
- Maintains compliance with all training requirements.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, and LabTracks.
This position does not entail any formal supervisory duties.
Compensation:The anticipated compensation for this role ranges from $19 to $21 per hour, based on experience.
