The San Francisco Department of Animal Care & Control (SFACC) operates as a publicly funded, open-admission animal shelter.
Since its inception, SFACC has been dedicated to providing shelter, care, and medical assistance to a diverse range of animals, including wild, exotic, and domestic species that are stray, lost, abandoned, sick, injured, or surrendered.
SFACC is committed to assisting all animals in need, irrespective of their species or condition.The organization also enforces state and local Animal Control and Welfare regulations and acts as the primary responder for animals during natural disasters and emergencies.
SFACC provides refuge for homeless, neglected, and abused animals while also offering humane education and various community services.SFACC is responsible for investigating animal cruelty, enforcing animal welfare laws, rescuing injured wildlife, and aiding domestic animals in distress.
SFACC strives to facilitate the adoption, re-homing, or reunion of domestic animals with their owners and to return wildlife to their natural habitats.
Role descriptionAppointment Type:
Temporary Exempt - As-Needed position is excluded from the competitive civil service examination process and serves at the discretion of the appointment officer.
This role does not include health or retirement benefits.Shift information: Maximum of 20 hours/week (typically divided as 8/8/4). Flexibility in scheduling is required, with at least one weekend day expected.

Job Description:
Under the direct supervision of the Behavioral and Training Assistant Supervisor, the 3370 Animal Care Specialist performs the following essential functions;
Assists the Behavior and Training (B&T) Assistant Supervisor in ensuring the shelter delivers top-quality care for dogs at SFACC.
Conducts behavior assessments on dogs to evaluate their suitability for adoption.Provides enrichment activities for dogs to alleviate stress and aids in implementing behavior modification strategies.
Organizes playgroups with other B&T staff on a weekly basis.
Responsible for instructing puppy classes for interested foster parent volunteers.
Conducts training sessions for volunteers.
Offers guidance to adopters before or after the adoption process, as necessary.
Performs general maintenance tasks, including laundry, dishwashing, and other duties related to B&T supplies and requirements.
Collaborates with B&T staff and the Volunteer Coordinator to encourage active participation from dog volunteers.Communicates effectively and professionally with colleagues, management, and the public at all times, promoting exemplary customer service.
Assists staff, volunteers, and the public in obtaining information regarding dog behavior and training.
Participates in special shelter initiatives and events, including town hall meetings and community engagement activities.
Performs related duties as assigned.How to qualify
- Six (6) months of verifiable hands-on professional or volunteer experience in the care, feeding, and/or handling of animals in a facility that cares for and/or houses animals (e.g., animal care/control agency, humane society, veterinary hospital, boarding or pet daycare facility, or pet store), primarily working with dogs and cats; OR
30 semester or 45 quarter units of coursework in animal husbandry, veterinary science, or a related program at an accredited college or university.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
Possession and maintenance of, or the ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Class C Driver's License.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
An ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
CPDT-KA, CTC, or equivalent certification, or comparable experience working with and training dogs in a professional capacity, including teaching public or volunteer dog training classes.
Knowledge of dog health and behavior issues, particularly those common in a shelter environment.Must be articulate, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities.
Must have the ability to be patient and tactful when interacting with challenging, sensitive, or emotional individuals and situations.
Strong active listening and communication skills are essential.Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Chameleon is a plus.
WORKING CONDITIONS INCLUDE:
Prolonged exposure to high noise levels and unpleasant odors in the kennels.
Interaction with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those who may be upset or hostile.
Responsibilities include cleaning animal waste and sanitizing kennels and/or cages.
A fast-paced office and working environment.
Frequent handling of dogs with unknown temperaments and behaviors.
Limited exposure to fumes or airborne particles and toxic chemicals.
Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings.
