Position Overview

The role of a Speech Pathologist is integral within educational settings, particularly in supporting the communication needs of students. This position is characterized by a high degree of autonomy and accountability, ensuring that students receive tailored interventions that enhance their learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities

As a Speech Pathologist, you will collaborate closely with educators to implement effective communication strategies across various classrooms. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting both formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress and inform funding evaluations.
  • Working with teaching teams to establish functional communication objectives as part of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Evaluating and applying Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) systems for students with complex communication requirements.
  • Designing and delivering targeted therapy interventions to meet specific communication and mealtime goals.
  • Providing comprehensive written strategies and plans to assist classroom teams in facilitating communication access.
  • Maintaining detailed records of therapy interventions to track progress and outcomes.
  • Engaging in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge relevant to the role.
  • Participating in mentorship and supervision sessions to refine therapeutic practices.
  • Contributing to school-wide initiatives aimed at improving communication accessibility and supporting disability advocacy.

Collaboration with Educators

Teachers are expected to integrate therapy interventions into their schedules, ensuring that students have consistent access to support. This includes:

  • Incorporating therapy sessions into the work program as directed by the Speech Pathologist.
  • Ensuring classroom staff are available to support therapy interventions.
  • Implementing strategies and recommendations provided by the Speech Pathologist throughout the school day.
  • Providing feedback on student progress to inform ongoing support.
