Communication Specialist in Education

Melbourne, Florida, United States Schools (Government) Full time

Position Overview

The role of a Communication Specialist in Education is characterized by significant managerial responsibilities, particularly in the realms of financial oversight, human resources, and various support functions. This position is accountable for overseeing a variety of operations, which may vary based on the scale and intricacy of educational institutions.

Objectives are typically well-defined, with broad guidelines and minimal daily supervision. The role encompasses ensuring that adequate support levels are maintained throughout the educational environment. The Communication Specialist plays a crucial role in providing essential support and timely guidance to the leadership team and educational council, while also engaging with the wider educational community, governmental departments, and service providers.

Specialized professional roles within this capacity demand a high degree of independence and accountability, allowing for the achievement of set objectives.

An education support position is designed to enhance the educational services provided to students, but it must not include teaching duties as outlined in relevant educational legislation. Supervision of students is not a requirement unless it is a fundamental aspect of the role or involves overseeing students in small groups under controlled conditions, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a qualified educator.

Key Responsibilities

Demonstrated knowledge and application of evidence-based practices and methodologies in primary and secondary educational settings, particularly for students at risk of or experiencing communication challenges. Familiarity with Language Support Programs and Programs for Students with Disabilities, along with the associated roles and responsibilities in supporting and implementing these initiatives in educational settings. Proven ability to disseminate relevant and accurate information while enhancing the skills of teachers, educational support staff, and parents through professional development opportunities aimed at holistically supporting students with additional communication needs. A commitment to lifelong learning and reflective practice as outlined in the CBOS competencies. Experience collaborating within a multidisciplinary professional team. Strong communication, networking, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively liaise with a diverse range of stakeholders within the educational community and beyond. Capability to utilize assessment, conceptual, and analytical skills in delivering student support services and engaging with children, young people, their families, and their broader support networks.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates should possess the aptitude, experience, and/or qualifications necessary to meet the specific demands of this position.

Commitment to EEO and OHS

Individuals seeking part-time employment are encouraged to apply for any educational service position and, if selected, may request a reduced time fraction. Such requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, subject to the operational needs of the educational institution.

The Department of Education is dedicated to the principles of equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion for all. We value diversity in all its forms, including gender, religion, ethnicity, LGBTIQ+, disability, and neurodiversity. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for positions within the Department. We recognize that providing family-friendly, supportive, safe, and harassment-free workplaces is essential for high performance and promote flexible work arrangements, diversity, and safety across all educational institutions and Department workplaces.

Additional support and guidance regarding the recruitment process are available for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidates.

Child Safety Standards

Victorian government schools prioritize child safety. Our institutions actively promote the safety and well-being of all students, with all staff committed to protecting students from abuse or harm in accordance with legal obligations, including child safety standards. Each school has a Child Safety Code of Conduct that aligns with departmental guidelines.

Department Values

Employees of the department commit to upholding its values: Responsiveness, Integrity, Impartiality, Accountability, Respect, Leadership, and Human Rights. These values complement the unique values of each school and underpin the behaviors expected of Victorian public sector employees, including those in government schools.

Additional Information

All staff employed by the Department and schools have access to a wide range of employment conditions and working arrangements. Appointment of successful candidates will be contingent upon a satisfactory pre-employment conditions check. A probationary period may apply during the initial year of employment, with induction and support programs provided. Comprehensive information regarding all terms and conditions of employment is available on the Department's Human Resources website.
