About The Unit

This unit comprises a 13-bed Oncology section along with 2 inpatient hospice beds, totaling 15 beds across both areas. Regular chemotherapy administration is performed for oncology patients, necessitating close monitoring. Comfort and end-of-life care are provided for our hospice patients. Typical patient ratios are 4-5:1 for Oncology and 2-3:1 for Hospice. Nurses have the opportunity to work in both oncology and hospice settings to gain cross-training experience. Bio-Chemotherapy training is required, with support provided if necessary.

Position Description

Role: Unit Charge Nurse

Schedule: Night Shift

Location: Health eCareers Facility

The Unit Charge Nurse is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the daily operations of a specific shift within the clinical unit. This role includes supervising staff and facilitating communication with physicians and internal administrators to ensure optimal patient and family-centered care.

As a recognized change agent, the Charge Nurse leads initiatives to enhance organizational systems that align with the department's mission, vision, and values. The role requires creative problem-solving, conflict negotiation, and collaboration with team members. The Charge Nurse exemplifies expert communication skills and demonstrates insight and judgment in clinical risk-taking.

The Charge Nurse is expected to:

- Oversee the effectiveness of operational forms and revise as necessary.
- Provide and coordinate resources to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
- Stay informed of innovative clinical trends through benchmarking and evidence-based practices.
- Mentor other Registered Nurses in the Charge Nurse role.
- Evaluate resource use and lead cost containment efforts.
- Foster team collaboration and leadership skill development among staff.
- Address communication issues and provide appropriate counseling when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
- A minimum of two years of experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least two years in the relevant specialty.
- A valid, active unencumbered Nursing license or temporary permit approved by the relevant licensing board.
- Oncology Certification is preferred.
- BLS certification is required; ACLS may be necessary in designated departments.
