Position Overview

Key Responsibilities of the Music Education Coordinator:

The Music Education Coordinator plays a vital role in guiding children (ages 18 months to 12 years) in developing their musical abilities. This includes fostering skills in listening, movement, reading musical notation, playing instruments, and singing through engaging musical activities tailored to their developmental stages.

Working Hours:

  • Monday and Wednesday: 10:00 am to noon
  • Tuesday and Thursday: 10:30 am to 3:15 pm
  • Friday: 10:00 am to 2:30 pm

The role encompasses 45 minutes of music class each week for elementary classes (ages 7 to 12), totaling 3 hours including transitions. Additionally, there are 9 sessions of 30-minute music classes for Primary classrooms (ages 2.9 to 6 years) (5 hours), and 4 sessions of 20-minute classes for Toddler students (18 months to 3 years). An extra two hours for lesson preparation can be scheduled at the Specialist's discretion.

Compensation: $38.00 to $42.00 per hour, with $25 per hour for lesson preparation time.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Elementary Program Director, with secondary reporting to the Early Childhood/Kindergarten Director and the Toddler Program Director.

Musical Duties:

  • Implement music curriculum components and materials, or show willingness to integrate philosophical elements for diverse student groups.
  • Incorporate both singing and instrumental activities into the curriculum.
  • Prepare educational materials and lesson plans that align with developmentally appropriate music education for various age groups: Toddlers (18 months to 3 years), Early Childhood - Kindergarten (3 to 6 years), Lower Elementary (1st to 3rd grade), and Upper Elementary (4th to 6th grade).
  • Create engaging weekly lesson plans that encompass warm-ups, finger plays (for younger groups), large movement activities, instrument exploration, and closing activities.
  • Expose students to music appreciation by introducing them to various musical instruments, styles, and traditions from around the globe.
  • Collaborate with a Drama Teacher to organize an annual elementary music performance.
  • Encourage and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Prepare biannual progress reports that differentiate between Kindergarten, Lower Elementary, and Upper Elementary activities.
  • Participate in essential school meetings and related functions.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.

  • Preferred experience in developing comprehensive music curricula for preschool through elementary students.
  • Punctuality and adaptability are essential.
  • Professional background in music principles, including notation, theory, and appreciation.
  • Specialized training in teaching music to young learners.
  • Experience in teaching musical concepts such as harmony, melody, rhythm, and others in an age-appropriate manner.
  • Proficiency in teaching specific instruments like keyboards, drums, recorders, and Orff Xylophones in small group settings.
  • Able to connect with and motivate students in a supportive manner.
