The Fire Protection Engineer role at Clark Nexsen is a specialized position dedicated to the execution of projects across various facility design initiatives. This position entails a comprehensive approach to fire protection engineering services, catering to both multi-discipline and single-discipline projects that range from small to large scales, focusing on commercial and governmental infrastructures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all facets of fire protection design services, including initial studies, programming, schematic documentation, design development, and construction documentation, under the guidance of a Senior Fire Protection Engineer or the Department Director.
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary design team.
  • Engage with clients to define and confirm the scope of work.
  • Prepare marketing and presentation materials as needed.
  • Seek advice from senior staff to address technical challenges and coordination issues.
  • Supervise and guide the work of junior staff assigned to projects, especially in complex situations.
  • Manage fire protection services during the bidding process, including the preparation of addenda and bid tabulation.
  • Conduct fire protection services during the construction phase, which includes site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and creating record drawings.
  • Adhere to the company’s quality control standards and procedures.
  • Coordinate with senior management and other disciplines, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Participate in team meetings and coordinate efforts with colleagues.
  • Mentor and oversee the professional growth of junior fire protection staff.

Project Duties:

  • Execute tasks as a Senior Fire Protection Engineer as directed.
  • Assume the role of Design Manager on assigned projects.
  • Prepare scope and fee proposals for both multi-discipline and single-discipline fire protection projects.
  • Conduct project code analysis for review by senior staff.
  • Select and layout fire protection systems, considering alternative options.
  • Create accurate, complete, and code-compliant drawings and specifications for various project phases.
  • Review calculations and deliverables produced by junior engineers and designers.
  • Ensure coordination of drawings with technical specifications and other disciplines.
  • Incorporate feedback from quality control reviews into project documentation.
  • Assist in responding to RFIs and review comments.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control reviews on assigned projects.
  • Maintain adherence to project budgets and timelines.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or a relevant postgraduate degree is preferred.
  • Proficiency in utilizing current software for documentation and project management.
  • Must hold a valid Fire Protection Engineer license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, ideally in the local area.
  • Experience as a lead designer or engineer in various sectors, including federal, state, municipal, healthcare, and commercial projects is advantageous.

Additional Skills:

  • Familiarity with sustainable design principles and practices, with LEED AP accreditation being a plus.
  • Certifications such as CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged for professional development.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations related to fire protection engineering is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of design and fire protection analysis software is highly beneficial.
