The Fire Protection Engineer role at Clark Nexsen is a specialized position dedicated to the successful execution of various facility design projects, encompassing both multi-discipline and single-discipline initiatives. This position entails overseeing multiple facets of fire protection engineering services across a spectrum of projects, ranging from small to large-scale endeavors for both commercial and governmental entities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive fire protection design services, including initial studies, programming, schematic design, development documents, and construction documentation under the guidance of a Senior Fire Protection Engineer or the Department Director.
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary design team.
  • Engage with clients to define and confirm project scope.
  • Prepare marketing and presentation materials as required.
  • Seek guidance from senior engineers and management to address technical challenges and conflicting criteria.
  • Supervise and direct the work of support staff on projects, particularly in complex situations.
  • Provide fire protection services during the bidding phase, including the preparation of addenda and bid tabulation.
  • Oversee fire protection services during the construction phase, which includes site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings.
  • Adhere to the company's quality control standards and procedures.
  • Collaborate with various team members, including architects, engineers, and project managers.
  • Participate in team meetings and coordinate efforts with colleagues.
  • Mentor and train junior fire protection staff as needed.

Project Responsibilities:

  • Perform tasks assigned by the Senior Fire Protection Engineer.
  • Act as Design Manager on assigned projects.
  • Prepare scope and fee proposals for fire protection components of multi-discipline and single-discipline projects.
  • Conduct project code analysis for review by senior engineers.
  • Select and layout fire protection systems, considering alternative solutions.
  • Create accurate, complete, and code-compliant drawings and specifications for various project phases.
  • Review calculations and work products produced by junior engineers and designers.
  • Ensure coordination of drawings with technical specifications and other disciplines.
  • Incorporate feedback from quality control reviews into project documents.
  • Assist in responding to RFIs and reviewing construction administration submittals.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control reviews on assigned projects.
  • Maintain adherence to project budgets and schedules.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or a relevant post-graduate degree is preferred.
  • Proficiency in current software applications for documentation and project management.
  • Must hold a valid Fire Protection Engineer license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, ideally in the local area.
  • Experience in leading design efforts for various project types, including federal, state, municipal, healthcare, and commercial projects, is advantageous.

Additional Skills:

  • Familiarity with sustainable design principles and practices, with LEED AP accreditation being a plus.
  • Encouraged to pursue additional certifications to enhance professional growth.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations related to fire protection engineering is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of design and fire protection analysis software is highly beneficial.

Work Environment:
