Our Raleigh, NC office is home to more than 200 design professionals, including a robust Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Structural (MEPS) Group dedicated to providing design services for clients throughout the region. Our extensive experience encompasses major healthcare systems, higher education institutions, K-12 schools, and central plants/infrastructure, among others. The MEPS group in Raleigh features subject matter experts in leadership roles within prominent professional organizations such as ASHE and ASHRAE. Our esteemed clientele includes many of the largest hospital systems, universities, and various government agencies at the state, local, and federal levels. Our MEPS service line is nationally recognized, ranking #30 among MEP Giants, while our Raleigh office holds the #3 position by size among engineering firms in the Triangle.

As our project backlog continues to expand, we are looking for a Senior Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineer to join our team in Raleigh, NC. In this role, you will provide strategic and technical leadership for our design teams across all aspects of Plumbing and Fire Protection engineering. You will support the Discipline Managers within a Business Unit/Office by offering operational and technical guidance to fulfill client expectations and budgetary constraints. Collaborate with a diverse team of engineers on a wide range of private, public, and federal projects. This position requires close cooperation with electrical, mechanical, structural, and other disciplines to deliver comprehensive services to our local and regional clients. In essence, you will provide essential operational and technical direction related to Plumbing and Fire Protection to ensure we meet our commitments. You will report directly to the Chief Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

Provide high-level oversight to senior Plumbing and Fire Protection engineering staff to facilitate effective operations and successful project completion:

  • Office Operations: Supervise all Plumbing and Fire Protection discipline managers within an office or business unit to ensure smooth intra-office operations, actively assisting department managers in managing their teams.
  • Service Line Operations: Collaborate with the Chief Engineer to lead the MEPS Service Line's Plumbing and Fire Protection community of practice, ensuring successful inter-office operations through active participation in community events and completion of delegated tasks.
  • Quality Management: Ensure compliance with corporate quality management processes and procedures among Plumbing and Fire Protection discipline managers.
  • Technical Management: Guarantee that discipline managers provide timely and adequate guidance, including code reviews, for all project work involving Plumbing and Fire Protection.
  • Staff Development Oversight: Ensure discipline managers offer appropriate technical training and development for staff through guidance and mentoring.
  • Standards Development Oversight: Lead the establishment and enhancement of standards, practices, guidelines, and specifications for the Plumbing and Fire Protection discipline, coordinating these standards with the Chief Engineer across offices.
  • Engineer of Record: Serve as the Engineer of Record on select projects as necessary.
  • On-the-Spot Advice: Provide immediate technical and cost estimate guidance as needed. The Principal Engineer is the foremost authority on Plumbing and Fire Protection within the office unless issues involve other offices in the service line, in which case the Chief Engineer presides.
  • Conflict Resolution: Coordinate with client/project managers and department managers to resolve Plumbing and Fire Protection engineering conflicts.
  • Office Organizational Management: Assist the Office/Business Unit Manager in ensuring successful office operations, including advice on staff organizational structure and office procedures.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License: An accomplished professional engineer with existing licensure in NC preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of 25 years of relevant experience.
  • Project Oversight: Proven success in providing technical oversight on multiple projects, ensuring they meet contract specifications and technical standards within budget and on schedule.
  • Communication Skills: Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
