About the Opportunity

This position is part of Abbott's Electrophysiology Division, where we're advancing the treatment of heart disease through innovative medical technologies. As a Senior Materials Scientist, you will lead Materials Science assessments and testing in support of the Electrophysiology Division's Product Stewardship program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with applicable Product Stewardship legislation, including REACH-like, RoHS-like, EU MDR, EU BPR, EU POPs, CA Prop 65, US Conflict Minerals, and EPR (WEEE, Battery, Packaging).
  • Lead and perform material assessments and testing according to Abbott objectives on emerging chemical/environmental issues.
  • Interact with internal partners to address technical questions related to product stewardship and compliance.
  • Provide Materials Science support to global Product Stewardship initiatives and regulatory compliance as needed.
  • Aid in Product Stewardship compliance checks, aid in identification and closure of compliance deficiencies related to Materials Science.
  • Mentor others by sharing knowledge expertise and providing feedback and guidance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or other science.
  • 6+ years of experience and/or advanced education in materials science.
  • Knowledge and technical expertise in testing techniques in materials science (e.g. FTIR, Raman, etc.).
  • Experience in working with cross-functional business unit teams.
  • Critical thinking, problem solving and planning skills.
  • Sound judgement and ability to build and maintain relationships with individuals and teams.
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
  • Ability to work in a team and make decisions in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience of Product Stewardship, Regulatory, Operational and/or Research & Development.
  • Medical device experience.
  • Experience in restricted substance management (e.g., REACH, RoHS).
